Best tube mono blocks under $15,000?
Hi Efner,That could well be. I tried them with the C2300, too, but that wasn't a good match, nor was the Shrimp with the MC501. Synergy is all. For example, I just got done auditioning a pair of PMC IB2i speakers with the Mac amps and preamp, and ...
Best tube mono blocks under $15,000?
I auditioned the Manley Snappers with Jumbo Shrimp preamp in my system driving Montana EPS2 speakers. Although I have a few amps, my primaries in this system are MC501 and C2300. Listening mostly to vinyl through a very fine analog front end, I an...
Acoustic Zen Crescendo
Victor: When you say the Crescendos have a laid-back sound, does that imply any want of high-frequency detail, air, or sparkle? When I owned Vandy 3A Sigs, as much as I liked them in many ways, I thought their laid-back character came with a sligh...
Power requirement for ADS L-1290?
Nice speaker! With mine I've used 1) a 25 watt HK430 receiver; 2) a 100 watt Outlaw RR2150 receiver; and 3) a 100 watt pure class A, high current boutique amp. They sounded 1) ok; 2) really good; 3)damned near great, respectively. Bottom line: the...
Acoustic Zen Crescendo
James_Edward and Rhljazz: Thanks a lot for the info. These speakers seem to offer a lot. I'm going to have to find a way to hear them!Bill
Acoustic Zen Crescendo
Rhljazz: Thanks a lot for the notes. From what I've read, Mr. Lee worked pretty hard to improve their original efficiency. What was your impression of the midrange drivers? Do you recall whether they seemed seamlessly coherent with the lows and hi...
Manley 300B or Manley Steelhead
Just breaking in my new Steelhead and loving it more by the day! But I prefer my Mac C2300 as a preamp into my MC501 amps. More open and refined. But, of course, its a synergy thing.
Single Driver Recommendations + amp Qs, Omega?
"the Omegas couldn't shake the furniture and would strain somewhat at high SPLs "What I actually meant was that the Moth S2A3 amp would stain at high SPLs. The Omegas can take a lot of power without strain. Excuse my mis-speaking.
Single Driver Recommendations + amp Qs, Omega?
For years I drove Omega Grande 8R with 3 watts of Moth S2A3 SET in a 28x17x8 room. Crazy, I know, but it worked! At 96 db efficiency, the Omegas couldn't shake the furniture and would strain somewhat at high SPLs but still sounded remarkably intim...
Vandersteen 3A sig , on the naked
JohnnyR: Double-blind test? No, never did one. But in my admittedly limited time with 5As, I though the HF more transparent and immediate with the lids off. "The grille structure smooths out the diffractive effects of the woofer enclosure/head tra...
Vandersteen 3A sig , on the naked
During the two years I owned 3A Sigs I was perpetually tempted to pull off their socks. Though they'd be visually repellent, I have no doubt they'd also sound more open and transparent, even if they were voiced with the socks on. I've never met a ...
PMC EB1i v. Thiel CS3.7 v. Pioneer S1-EX v. ???
Sashav: I appreciate your elaboration. While something of a vicarious information sponge, I'm also an empiricist and, in the end, will be led by my ears. As I said, I should get the EB1i in-house next week. I've also been invited to pop down to Sa...
PMC EB1i v. Thiel CS3.7 v. Pioneer S1-EX v. ???
Sashav: You have a wonderful breadth of experience with fine speakers. Thank you very much for the detailed descriptions; they're quite helpful. Like Ryder, I'm also interested in your thoughts comparing the Wilsons and Revels to the PMCs, especia...
PMC EB1i v. Thiel CS3.7 v. Pioneer S1-EX v. ???
I've lined up an in-home audition of the EB1i for a few days next week. It should give me a pretty good idea of the family sound and how it mates with my room and electronics.Rhljazz: I'd like to hear the Crescendo. Might be hard to scare up an au...
PMC EB1i v. Thiel CS3.7 v. Pioneer S1-EX v. ???
Petesm and Ryder: Thanks for your reflections. In the PMC line up, I'm starting to think the IB2i is the way to go if I can swing the price. I've never heard the Sophias buy I'll look into them.
