The best speaker cables you’ve had Sadly, John, Vishay VAR can dissipate a maximum of 0.4W of heat. A speaker resistor is often rated at 10 W or more. So Vishay VAR could only work in a large and expensive array, and then you would still need another conductor. As for obtaining th...
The best speaker cables you’ve had @jhnnrrs Well John, you’re not wholly wrong, I’ll give you that. Void the warrantee, true. The rest, not so much. You have heard of wire wound resistors, perhaps? That’s "hokey nichrome wire", or some variant thereof. Guess you’d better tell Mill...
The best speaker cables you’ve had Before you buy, get a schematic of your speaker. Some speakers, especially ESL's, have a resistor in series with the input. Solution: make up you own speaker cables with that specified resistance, and remove the resistor in the speaker. If you hav...
Sat front row at the symphony... Every time I improve my tonearm I think that NOW the system sounds like live music. Then I go upstairs to the grand piano ...
Admitting my error… Don't forget a good ultrasonic record cleaner, especially if you buy used. Not only improves the sound considerably, but also reduces stylus wear. If your cartridge is costly, US cleaner can even be cost-effective. It is for me.
What record cleaner is the most bang for the buck?? I used a VPI 16.5. Then I tried 80KHz ultrasound. The latter made as much difference as the upgrade of a major component, so I cleaned all my records with US. Later, I found that my stylus hadn't worn much - minimal wear at 1000 hours, verified by...
Stupid Asking Prices- Why Don't Sellers Read Audiogon The Blue Book First? I just calmly explain my reasons for offering less. Sometimes the owner responds with, "Yeah, sure," especially if it's been sitting for a while. So from my perspective overpriced items are a good thing, as they often indicate gear that's in excep...
ONE MINUTE Premium Power Cable Survey Way, I just re-read my comment and it was far too abrupt. Sorry about that. I was responding as if to a survey with public policy ramifications, done by a pro. Now you are suggesting Best Practice. Impressive. Thank you.
ONE MINUTE Premium Power Cable Survey A note on survey design - allow more space for open-ended responses for why the questions do not apply. In my case, because I use isolation transformers before power supplies. This does the same job, but better. These are results of experiment..
Thinking of Magnepan ... finally! @yesiam_a_pirate "If you want to use them for home theater you will be sorely disappointed." Only if you count the EPM (explosions per minute). I have an all-planar 7.0 system with plenty of bass: 6 Magnepan MMW, 2 DWM bass panels and a Quad 290...
Law Of Diminishing Returns? Third post nailed it (mulveling). Is that $10k cartridge THAT much better? Only if the rest of your system is.
Forced to DIY DIY since I retired. Can't afford a $250,000 table, but I can get the same or better performance with a little thought and lots of research. All it takes is time, that and willingness to compromise on non-essentials. So my table doesn't have a pre...
Thinking of Magnepan ... finally! DWM bass panels use magnets on BOTH sides of the vibrating mylar film. This results in the very linear push-pull effect, which gives minimum distortion. The 20 series does that too for the bass panels IIRC. That’s why the best panel bass is qualit...
Thinking of Magnepan ... finally! You could upgrade the crossovers, but that's just icing on the cake. IMO.
Thinking of Magnepan ... finally! I first heard Magepan in 1973, the Tympani 1A's. I was hooked and blew 70% of the budget on them. Since then I have had SMG's, IIIA's, and now I use 6 x MMGW plus two DWM's and a Quad 2905 (centre) in the HT. Also I use two DWM's to complement my... |
