@lewm  Yes, what I wrote was ambiguous. I meant, "I agree with Lew (about TT and tonearm being important) AND TT is most important ...". @pedroeb  Absolutely. Which is also why some mechanism of keeping the record flat is so important. Vacuum hol...
Planar speaker characteristics
Planars are so fast that few subs can keep up. Magnepan also sells small bass panels (DWM) to augment the bass - I use them in my listening room and HT. I'd rather have clean bass and lose the bottom octave than have muddy sound at all frequencies...

@pedroeb Three phase is easily obtained by driving a 3 phase motor with a 1 phase, and tapping the 3 phase power inputs. Viola, 3 phase power. But 3 phase is more complicated than it looks, and so is better left alone. But it’s pretty much acad...
Where did you buy your first audio gear?
Jonas Miller, Beverley Hills: Magnepan Tympani 1a. What memories!
Recommendations for HiFi Listening Room
If you’re locked in for 15 years, you are very wise to get advice first. I say: audition, audition, and audition. As others have mentioned, planar speakers are qualitatively different. I am a devoted planar man: dedicated sound room uses 4 Quad E...
One turntable with two arms, or two turntables with one each - which would you prefer?
@dover  Now that's the solution!
Direct Drive
@drbond You say, "AnalogMagik software does measure instantaneous speed. I think Fremer may use it, or possibly have some other software by which he determines the variability and stability of speed control of the turntables that he evaluates." ...

@lewm Sorry to be obscure, but some were questioning @dover about the theoretical basis, so I thought there was an interest. Not saying that it was worse than previous Technics DD. Just saying that there is no such thing as an instantaneous speed...

@lewm  I don't doubt that the average speed of a modern turntable is right on the money. But, according to accepted statistical theory, there is more to a phenomenon than just the mean. Consider the platter speed to be a random variable whose di...

How does it sound? Well, I can HEAR the noise from the plastic sleeve bearings on that 1/500 HP motor! Only faintly audible as a slight grainy brightness, but audible nevertheless. Paired with my DIY air bearing tonearm and higher end Koetsu (dia...

@pedroeb My turntable is built around a New Way thrust bearing, an air bearing in all three dimensions. This right away puts you in rarified (6 figure) company. Next is inspiration from the late Tom Fletcher, who reasoned that a tiny motor coul...
What is the “World’s Best Cartridge”?
@dover  I think we are seeing  that logic is not someone's strong suit, whatever his pretensions.

Yes, tangential tonearms sound better. But they are a higher end thing, and you probably won't hear the benefits until you're spending a fair bit. How handy are you? It's not hard to make a DIY belt drive table that will be far better than anythi...
Opinions before purchasing
I've tried a bunch of things in my HT, and the best is a Magnepan system (current). I use MMG-W mid-treble units for everything but the centre, which is a Quad, but the MMG-W would work for that too. Add a DWM woofer for L and R channel (as  I do)...
To truly enjoy this hobby, I need to learn electronics. Any book recs?
Yes, V=IR sounds simple, but it's really not about V (voltage) but about voltage DROP, which equals current x resistance. The real power of Ohm's Law comes when you can accommodate reactance in addition to pure resistance (reactance encompases cap...
