Telarc 1812 revisited
That Telarc is analogous to a trick...it has no relevance to real music on a real record. If your cartridge/arm can track it fine, if not so what. Its the music that counts.

The most important cables are the power cords.

Too bad your wife can't be persuaded to go for Vandersteen...they are your best bet. Their more expensive speakers have more wife acceptance.

You simply can't. Find a speaker that you like in the store and hope the rest of your stuff mates well with it.

Cardas Golden Reference Power vs. Clear Power
...absolutely right. Cardas does add body and fullness, but this is a plus only if you need body and fullness. In my system, Cardas was the worst sounding cable I tried. It made the system dead and lifeless inserting a "brown" character to everyth... 
Cable design
In MY experience, the connectors are the biggest factor in how the cable sounds. Only use shielded cable if you really need the protection against RFI. Shielding actually closes down the sound. Copper and silver (and gold, etc.) sound DIFFERENT......

I've had several of Harry's platters. You should try the current ceramic platter that he uses on his direct drive table....it is open, dynamic, and good looking.

I have had Vandersteen 5A's driven by Ayre for a number of years....i have heard many systems during that time and none have made me think of changing. (though some have made me laugh) 
installing the SME V tonearm in the Technics SP10
Remember...the V has no adjustment for azimuth, so when mounting it on the table, make certain it is absolutely square.
