Solid State to replace Audio Research REF110?
Ayre - great sound, great customer support
$7K to spend on new turntable + arm
I wouldn't worry about the Valhalla wiring. Actually, although the Nordost is brighter, overall, the Discovery has a better midrange and bass...although I guess that depends on the overall character of your system.
Benefit of low output moving-iron Grado ?
By using a low output version, I suspect, you will hear very little if any difference in your system. I would check the capacitance and make sure its within the recommended bounds. Check your setup again and again to be sure it was installed corre...
VPI Direct Drive Turntable
Even VPI says that their direct drive is only a bit better than their Classic 3. They make the DD for those that need that extra bit.
Nordost New LE series speaker cables. Improved??
Nordost Red Dawn was too bright for my system....I preferred the Blue Heaven
Chime in.What's the Best Cassette Recorder ever ?
Probably the Nackamici
Turntables and power conditioners?
I find that good power cords are a great asset, power conditioners a liability
Benz Ebony LP or Lyra Delos ?
The Benz Ebony TR is a VERY low output cartridge and needs the best pre that can be had to bring out its virtues. I would get the Benz LP and trade it for an LPS....a really great cartridge.
Arm Heighth on VPI Classic
JRSbat2....knock yourself out...no harm done ...even down the road
Arm Heighth on VPI Classic
The reason tail down became a popular way to set up an arm was that moving coil cartridges nearly always had a high frequency lift to them that tail down reduced. We all should use our ears to determine the setup of our rigs...but if you want to p...
Arm Heighth on VPI Classic
Hiendmuse....I know, I know....Harry sets up his arms horizontal, and then listens by slightly raising the rear...but the arms are mainly horizontal. I have a 3D arm - I've been setting up arms for about 40 years, but just recently came across an ...
Arm Heighth on VPI Classic
Rockyboy....yesHiendmuse....you probably need to raise the rear end of the tonearm much more then parallel. This is a common misunderstanding....try the rear end quite high and listen before setting it horizontal..or even close to horizontal.
VPI bearing oil/grease?
VPI sells their own lubrication - it comes in a hypodermic type of applicator, and although it is called Magic Lube and is probably expensive for what it is, I know that it is the recommended stuff that VPI sanctions. (It looks like lithium grease)
Arm Heighth on VPI Classic
This adjustment should be done using critical listening. I suspect that such a small adjustment is not worth the effort.
Melos MA220 tube phono stage
Melos was a very good high quality component. I used to know George but that was 30 years ago....he was sick then...I'm not so sure he's still around. After such a long time, I wonder if your unit is playing well.
