Kef uni-q owners help, to toe-in or not to toe-in?
I know that Uni-Q feeling. When I had KEF Q90's the manual mentioned the equilateral triangle and suggested slight toeing if desired, whatever slight means. A consensus of reviewers in one British stereo mag said straight ahead was best. I set min...
Expectations in upgrading the power amp or preamp
For me, upgrading the power amp brought an enhanced sense of air, ease and effortlessness. Tonally, maybe it added some top end air and maybe some bass control. A good power amp is like a strong, quiet bodyguard: it's there if you need it but othe...
grainy sounding high end system
Put some rugs on the floor.
Using a studio monitor for home listening?
Studio monitors are thought to be ruthlessly revealing and not possessed of the common dips and roll-offs which make home speakers enjoyable. Due to inevitable imperfections, good speaker systems are "voiced" by their designers to achieve desired ...
Balanced impedence?
Thanks Herman, the link is helpful. Given the link's explanation that a matched impedance connection will attenuate the signal by 6dB and thus require 6 dB more gain, can I assume, that because balanced signals typically double the output voltage,...
Balanced impedence?
Thanks for your response Gs. I now see that many power amps do typically offer high balanced input impedances. What led me astray are these lines from the Threshold S/350e owner's manual: "The balanced setting provides a standard 600 Ohm profession...
Shipping boxes to Canada?
I shipped a Nakamichi CD Player to Canada via UPS Ground. The buyer freaked when he had to cough up brokerage and customs fees. He got a good price but the surprises made him an unhappy camper. His outrage still lingers on my mind. Next time I'll ...
5 way binding post connection advice
At the bare wire ends, tin the exposed surfaces with solder to prevent oxidation. The soft solder also gives the post something to grab onto without chewing up the conductor too much. Spades are the connector of choice because it's said they offer...
Here's how a CD copy of a copy can sound better
The hard yards to overcome in CD playback and recording are timing errors, not bits. You may trap all the bits but if the timing is not perfect (and it never is) you'll get jitter which, if gone untreated, turns some people into LP junkies.
Do you pay seller for packaging supplies?
Some sellers are great and understand the concept of customer satisfaction. Others seem peeved that they must go to any effort at all to convey the product to the buyer, as if it's the buyers fault and consequent responsibility for purchasing. Som...
The best audio steal or deal you've ever gotten?
My best deal ever was a Dual 1215 with Shure M91ED cart for $2.50 at a garage sale. It came with base and dustcover with sliding rails attached for cabinet mounting. The auto shut-off prongs were bent so I doubt it saw much service. The like-new S...
Shipping tube amps, leave tubes in or out?
Though I see you found your answer, for the record I'd remove the tubes and ship them separately. Lighter packages have a higher chance of survival because they bounce. Read the shipping horror stories on here. Heavy packages get smashed.
Pro/Con Floorstanding VS Monitor, which's better?
I've had both. Monitors are easier on the eyes. Well made ones are elegant. Floorstanders dominate the space they populate. They're more dynamic. All I can suggest is walk the walk and discover which you prefer for your environment.
Deja Vu All Over Again
Yep Gregm, and I let go my 63 E-type for a whopping $980 and one free beer from the buyer. All she needed was a new clutch and TLC. Hey, maybe if I'd stuck to my $1,000 asking price she'd still be mine *sigh*
Hendrix blues
In the November issue of Tower Records' free mag Pulse there was an article wherein various artists reflected on their relationship to Hendrix. Buddy Guy said Hendrix used to come to see him play but Guy neither mentioned nor implied any collabora...
