Threshold Amps
See the Threshold Archives at http://www.rsvlonline.net/vintageamp/ Each model from Pass or Threshold has a slightly different twist, not to mention various looks. You must decide what is right for your needs.
Threshold Amps
As far as I know, Threshold was founded about 1974 by Nelson Pass and Rene Besne. In 1988, it was acquired by a big corporation. Besne left the company in 1991 and Pass left in 1992. Thereafter, it appears Threshold's products were designed by Mic...
CD Transports with AES/EBU Digital Bal
Theta's Data Basic II has AES/EBU. Good deals on prime units sell for under $1,000.
Why can't my components just get along?
Static and fizzle at a specific frequency sounds like a tube resonating to me. Let's hope the new glass does the trick.
Proac Response 1sc or Merlin TSM-SE
Try the ProAc Tablette 2000 Signatures. A bargain at $400 less than the 1SC, they have the same binding posts, the same tweeter, a slightly larger stiffened cabinet, almost the same woofer as the 1.5, and they only come in premium finishes - an op...
cd cataloging
I use Lotus 123. Microsoft Works or Excel ought to do the trick too. I've seen commercial programs but what's the point? By using the sort function you can make a hardcopy any way you want it. Add as many defining columns as you like. Have fun wit...
Sand or shot for speaker stands?
Sackrete Contractor Grade Fine at Home Depot is uniform and dry (they keep it inside unlike the kiddie sand) and slides right thru a flunnel ~ $4 for 50lbs. My two-column targets took 20 lbs. each and no regrets. Don't forget to stick your 805's t...
Proportional Allocation to Total System

Balanced Interconnects??
Yeah I agree electrical energy travels in waves, and either the positive or negative polarity represents the whole waveform. My guess is that single ended stuff has to create the opposite polarity voltage through inversion because it's simply not ...
Balanced Interconnects??
Sorry Pisani, the waveform analogy is wrong. Per the Belden Cable catalog: A balanced line is a cable having two conductors which carry voltages opposite in polarity and equal in magnitude with respect to ground. If any audio signal is composed of...
Balanced Interconnects??
Balanced connections on XLR jacks can send both sides, positive and negative, of the waveform. RCA connections can send only one side, usually the positive. So balanced stereo stuff has four signals to work with instead of two, and why it costs mo...
leave amps on?
I left my Threshold S/300 Series II on for eight years running. I hear that minimizing the number of thermal cycles makes them last longer. Works for me!
My wife is so uncool!
My ex used to wait until the best part of the tune came on, like the guitar crescendo on meddle or the drum bit at the end of abbey road and then scream at me from the bottom of the stairs that led my listening room hideway. Needless to say, she k...
should I biwire???
yes biwire! if you do, only high frequency currents will flow to the tweeter and only low frequency currents will flow to the woofer. then you can sleep at night knowing you did what you could to make them sound their best :o)
