Pre-Amp Reliability -- 4th time mine has conked Classe DR5 no repairs in 16yrs. Audio Research and VAC preamps have required no repairs either. I think 4 breakdowns in 15 yrs is excessive.
3 great choices I would recommend the VAC also. I also have N802's and use a Renaissance preamp which I found to be a huge step up from an Audio Research LS15. The infinite remote volume control is a big plus. The stepped controls always offer a level too loud or...
Drying sand in the oven- anyone try it? Home Depot sells bags of sand already dried.
Reliability of Cary Audio Products I have an SLI50 purchased new in 1996 and have had to replace the power switch (it failed stuck on, wouldn't turn off)and the selector switch that became noisy. I purchased the parts from Cary and performed the repair myself. The switches are on t...
Comparison of B&W N802 vs. 803D I have not heard the 803D but did a direct comparison between the N803 and N802 and the N802 was clearly superior in the bass and mid-range. The Marlan enclosure for the mid driver in the N802 should not be disregarded. I would expect that plus th...
Sergio Mendez, what album title for this song? Thanks Opalchip for the info. I checked for Lani Hall on the Music Direct site and they did not carry anything.
ARC LS25 or Pass Labs X1?? Since you already have the VAC amps, why not go with a VAC Renaissance preamp? It has a motorized infinitely variable volume control that is a joy to use. I replaced an LS15 with a Renaissance preamp and the the difference was far more than I expe...
Imaging Problem: Blinding Flash of the Obvious Not likely your problem. My ceiling height is 8 ft on the left side and 11.5 ft on the right and I have a perfect center image. A bigger detriment would be if you have an opening on one side wall and not the other. If all connections are correct, ...
Sergio Mendez, what album title for this song? Foster 9, I did find the greatest hits disc and listened to it last night. I liked it. It sounded best through my VAC tube dac versus the Linn. Nice to listen to in the dark. The cover shows two female vocalists, wow what nice sounding voices but ...
Sergio Mendez, what album title for this song? Thanks guys. Music direct has a listing for the LP but nothing for the CD. Do you know of any other good mail order sources that might have the CD? I might also try to order through my local Borders Music store.
What about a product can irritate you? Stepped volume controls are the pits. It always seems the volume is too loud at one position and too quiet at the next one down. Also, any mechanical noises heard through the speaker, hum and hiss tick me off.
Here we go again ... driving B&W N802s There is a VAC PA100 offered now that sounds far better than Classe, Krell, Levinson, or Linn which are the other amps I have experienced with N802's. The VAC has plenty of power for loud listening without the"dentist drill" irritation of solid st...
Biasing Classe power amps I have my DR8's set at 4x22ma for 88ma per channel. I think the maximum recommeded value is 4x24ma equals 96ma per channel. The higher bias does sound warmer and smoother. I experimented beween 4x19ma to the 4x24ma and compromised at the setting I...
Dynamics and Microdynamics You didn't mention which preamps or source were used. Assuming the source components were the same, I will say the N802's are more detailed when spiked, it is not likely they will be set up that way in a dealers show room. I will also say they sou...
Tubes for VAC PA 100/100 Svetlana KT88's,(Winged "C") branded now, are more neutral than the VAC supplied tube. They are not as fat and bloomy through the bottom end with more definition on top. The quality of the driver tube will make a big difference also. I prefer NOS ... |
