Nordost Thor &State of the ART: Power conditioners The only way to find out is try one in your system. My impressions are that the Thor tightens up the bottom end and improves image focus. It is especially noticeable when listening off axis, that for example a female singer is projected out betwee...
4 ohm vs 8 ohm taps My speakers are rated at 8 ohms and drop to 3.5 ohms through a region in the bass. They always sound best from the 8 ohm taps on either of my VAC amps. I think you should stay with the 8 ohm taps.
Worst Name for A Piece of Equipment At least he didn't name it the Tricky DAC.
Phoenix area stores The stores mentioned above are mostly home theatre. I would recommend AZ Hi Fi in Tempe. They carry mostly tube electronics and analog gear. They also sell some CD's and records. My store of choice. It is a little off the beaten track, located in ...
Stick with your stock cables ? A difference is not necessarily an improvement. I have substituted power cords and think initially they sound better only to find after a period of time some irritating aspect and return to the stock cord. My experience mirrors French fries on thi...
Worst Name for A Piece of Equipment Edge amplifiers, who wants an edgy sounding amp? (I know they don't actually sound that way)Phonomena phone stage, not necessarily a bad name but the dealer nick named it, the phono enema. (I own one)I also agree all the Manley names like Shrimp, ...
Best "P" mount cartridge? Cheapmike, the greatest improvement in sound I've achieved with my SL10 was changing what it sat on. The rack it sits on is a deluxe Room Tunes rack which has shelves that are around an inch thick with brass spikes on the bottom and sitting on a c...
Best "P" mount cartridge? I like the Ortofon TM20. It sounds well balanced and neutral. It doesn't exaggerate surface noise. I have it mounted to a Technics SL10 and prefer it to the original moving coil cartride (too lean and peaky) or the Shure (a bit dull). It works equ...
How trustworhty is Used Cables? I purchased a Tara Labs digital interconnect from them and the cable I received was brand new for the price of used. Perhaps an exception, but I was pleasantly surprised.
jolida issues? first tube amp Most tube amps should not be powered up with no load, ie. speakers not connected. This is probably the reason the fuse keeps blowing. Don't do that anymore.
Help to make a choice: BAT; VAC; E.A.R. At this point I would characterize the PHI 110 as being a more polished sound. It is certainly more spacious sounding and has tighter bass control. The result being that it doesn't have the fat round bass and quite the treble bite that embellishs ...
Help to make a choice: BAT; VAC; E.A.R. The down side of the Renaissance amps is the expense of replacing 300B output tubes, even cheap ones are expensive. A PA100/100 would do the job. For the price, if you have the space the 220 mono amps would be awesome. I was using a PA100/100 to d...
new tube break in I'm pretty much in agreement with Fatparrot on this one. The biggest change will be in the first 25 hrs. After that they will settle in slowly. I have the Shuguang KT88 in my VAC PA100 and compared to the Svetlana's they are more mellow, more uppe...
Crackling sound then nothing You have a bad output tube. Whichever ones you tweaked the bias for are the bad ones. Install new tubes and a fuse and you should be back in business. I use my PA100 about 3-4 hrs a day and after a year and a half it needs new tubes.
Anyone spend more on their system than their car? I just spent 8000.00 to repaint my 1970 BMW and 4500.00 the year before to convert to fuel injection so the old car investment has been pretty heavy the last couple of years. The audio system got a new/used PHI 110 amplifier this year and a Thor p... |
