Looking for phono stage recommendations
Don't overlook the EAR 834P just because it's cheap and tubed. Its an excellent little unit.
You might be an audiophile if...
You're an audiophile if your local high end store's salesment won't give you a demo of a high cost component you know you can't afford, and you get offended!
I know I have lost my mind and have gone insane
I have similar experiences everytime I play with my cables and IC's. Next day its back to normal. Doesn't have diddly to do with them laying on the floor (I have hardwood, perhaps thats why) or being elevated. Nrchy is right out routing your cable...
Quad ESL 989 and Maggie 3.6s
FWIW, I always find it interesting when people complain about the lack of bass (32hz+) in the 63's and 988's. Most often these are the same folks who say the speakers sound best when they are elevated 8 to 12 inches off the floor (which would redu...
tubes or no tubes
Gelmhirst, If you haven't pulled the trigger yet - I'm in the process of breaking in a new Primaluna 5 amp. I have 92db speakers, 4ohm, and am I impressed. I'm using SED KT88's. Its cheap, well built and idiot proof, plug and play! Something to th...
Best recording / performance Dvorak Cello conc.
Texasdave, Thanks for the recommendation on Helmerson/Jarvi. Jarvi's Dvorak on Chandos is pretty good, generally speaking, so I'm going to give this a try. :-)
Can HI FI components really make music?
I don't know what 'sound you are looking for' but if you're looking for live, forget it. You will never even come close, dispite all of the hype! But, having said that you can still put together a fine system which will allow you to come close to ...
Tube bias and related ramblings very exciting
Just a WAG. Without specifics on the amp thats all you get. Something around 50ma should be a safe setting.
Do I have Intermittent cartridge skipping?
Whats going on, musically speaking, at the point when the skipping starts. Sharp/loud sound perhaps? Whats your VTF v the manufacturer's recommendations?
Best of Etta James, Ella Fitzgerald, Sarah Vaughan
BTW, although you didn't ask I can't resist - try some Etta Jones. Great voice - somewhat similar in style to the older jazz greats. She passed recently from cancer. A commorative compilation CD, "Etta Jones, Always In Our Hearts" on Blue Note. I ...
Is there a length limit for Turntable cables?
Nsgarch, I do believe you are right! Its capacitance for MM cartridges and resistence for MC's. I haven't used a MM for 20 years, and I have a short term memory problem. :-)
Man, am i losing my hearing?
Its called attention span deficit, or no short term memory when it occurs in the presence of a new girl fried. Your mind is occupied with things other than the words from her lips. :-) Now if you have this problem with music or others speaking, go...
Best of Etta James, Ella Fitzgerald, Sarah Vaughan
Kill two birds with one stone, so to speak - Etta James' Mystery Lady, Songs of Billie Holiday. Private Music, distributed by BMG Distribution 01005-82114-2.
Is there a length limit for Turntable cables?
Much depends on the type of cartridge you are using and its interface with the IC's. As I recall from long ago before I started using MC cartridges, the MM cartridge output has to be matched to the resistance factor of your phono cable. Too long o...
Quad ESL 989 and Maggie 3.6s
FWIW, from my experience in auditioning Maggies, and owning Quads (63's) the differences I heard are significant and which you prefer will depend on your expectations. The Quads are much more of a point source speaker where as the Maggies are more...
