Midrange hiss....VERY slight...with my Dared pre
Some tube preamps have a high noise floor. Some tubes are not 'low noise'. Some amps have high input sensitivity. Some speakers are very efficient. Any or all of these things, especially when combined (two or more), can cause a sound called "tube ...
Looking for well recorded great piano on CD's
For classical, Volados playing Schubert is a no-brainer! Great Schubert and an excellent recording as well. Also, Paul Jacobs playing Debussy's Preludes on Non-such. And, for some thing really different, but very well done, are two albums from Tel...
Spanish Guitar music

For those interested in the PrimaLuna Prologue One
Aks434, "From Newbee's mail it sounds for serious listening Primaluna is not adequate." Whether it is adequate or not depends on your expectations, your speakers, and your wallet. FWIW, I just took a 3 week vacation, came back and turned on the On...
Whose sorry now? Sellers remorse from selling amp.
Wish I hadn't sold my Rogers LS3/5a's and my Threshold SA3. Talk about dumb, but back then that was the admission price to 'upgrading' components. Now I live in fear of making another silly mistake and in the past 15 years the only thing I have so...
Tubes for Jolida 1501 hybrid integrated
FWIW, I use EI's (12's and 6's) on all of my stuff. Clean, clear, balanced, and a small tad on the warm side of neutral compared to most Russian tubes and JJ's. Spend an extra dollar or two and buy only from a dealer who actually tests for microph...
tube amp info
The amps input sensitivity will determine how loud it will sound given the same output signal from a pre-amp. I don't have a formulae for calculation but for example using the same pre-amp with an amp w/ an input sensitivity of .5v I get a couple ...
Best cable recommendations - help
Wow, I never thought of changing cables when listening to LP's of various thicknesses! Are you talking about phono cables, IC's between phono pre and pre amp, pre-amp and amp, speaker cables or power cables? Any or all? Would you expect to use dif...
Regarding DK Design Vs.1 Reference Mk2 amp ???
dfking, I'm happy that you love your DK amp(s). Yes I do know of someone who has one and its up for sale on the 'gon. I have not heard it, nor have I EVER said anything negative about it, I have no position or stake in that issue. Now if you want ...
Tube Question
With small tubes you should have an excellent idea of the tubes ultimate sound with 24 hours of use, even less. There might be some change after that but it will be very minor. Power tubes are a different matter.
Using Bad Recording to Evaluate a System
FWIW, I can see the benefit in taking recordings that are less than optimum for a couple of reasons. 1) Taking a SOTA recording of music you love....It will sound great on many systems AND you love the music so much you will be inclined to listen ...
Regarding DK Design Vs.1 Reference Mk2 amp ???
Let me sum this up....You sold an old Chevy Nova for $400 and its worth $12K to $20K.You Didn't buy a $25K Dino thats now worth 100k.You now recommend we buy DK's because they will be a collectors item! By your own admission you missed two opportu...
How to tame remote volume control on TAD-150
Fixed in line attenuators such as made by Rothwell will give you another 10db of movement in your volume control. The cost about $60 for a pair and can be found on the 'net. They have been mentioned here before - you should find them if you do a s...
ARC sp10 MkII tube question
Rumble? As in very low frequency? Doesn't sound like a problem I've ever experienced with tubes in the phono stage or the line stage. Dumb question time, does it rumble when the muted? Does it rumble with all inputs? or just TT. Does it rumble in ...
Jazz Recommendations.
Personally, I wouldn't start off with the standeard recommendations like Miles Davis, Coltrane, etc. I would recommend some of the more assessible jazz from the 50's & 60s, by such artists as Bill Evans (piano) Oscar Peterson (piano), Stan Get...
