Best outdoor antenna???
Yagi's should be used with a rotor, however they are not as effective at reducing signals from the rear as they are from the side, therefor if your two favorite stations are 180 degrees apart you can point it at the furthest one and you may get a ...
powering up pre-amp
You can also activate the mute switch on the pre-amp before powering down. That should prevent any transients from reaching the amp should you still be connected to it and its a good habit anyway.
tube character with pre-amp
FWIW, as I recall the SFL 1 you can use either 6922 or 12AX7a's ( I think you must make a minor adjustment in the preamp). If that is correct you have a lot of options depending on what tone you want. Best to listen to what you have carfully, then...
Slight buzz on Quad ESL-63..
My quads sort of rattled when you over drove them with highly percussive bass notes, and on high frequencies I got a low level buzz from piano notes in a narrow frequency band. Don't know if its the same cause of both problems, but a Quad garu tol...
its all about the music,no way hose
Wouldn't it be wonderful, if in addition to enjoying 'your' hobby, you were also really (seriously) involved with the music that was playing as well? For many of us, certainly speaking for myself, that is precisely what is occuring. That way we ca...
Does a listening room help or hinder?
Sounds to me like you need some new music to explore. Hard to seriously listen to music that has become mundane or boring.
I'm looking for thoughts on the Tyler Acoustics...
Gsselling, Great purchase. Take Oldpets advise. His experience mirrored mine re break-in time and ultimate satisfaction (We have the same speakers). I initially thought Ty was going to get his speakers back! Not! :-)
Reducing room TEMP. when using tube equipment.
Get a small integrated tube amp like the PrimaLuna. Not enuf heat to make a difference and they sound pretty decent. Use it during the hot months. BTW, if you think the 80's are hot and you have no air conditioning I must assume you live in that f...
phono preamps with a subsonic filter?
Dopogue, Apparently my response was ambiguous.FWIW, my reference to a "bandaid" was to using a subsonic filter to mask a problem in the cartridge/arm matchup. The effect of mis-match will creep up into the audible frequencies if you don't correct ...
phono preamps with a subsonic filter?
If the subsonics are on the record and not a result of the arm/cartridge (mis)matching I'm not sure how much help the filter might be. I have a TC with a sub sonic filter and a couple of LP's which cause substantial woofer excursions. I put the fi...
Power Conditioners to reduce Sibilance
Adamg, Before you invest in wire and power conditioners etc make sure you have exhaused your explorations regarding system set up and room treatments. Toe in is a huge issue for sibilence (or brightness in general). Many speakers are 'hot' when yo...
Why is it so much more civil over here on Agon?
Blkadr, to "Because we got class" - you might add 'and we have equipment to sell'. No reward if being offensive to potential customers is there? :-)
Why is it so much more civil over here on Agon?
FWIW, while there may be some JD's with bad manners and a poor sense of humor at AA (and of course there are none on this site) there are some extremely knowlegable people who post there and share their knowlege and experience generously. Lurking ...
Can 60 triode watts drive Quad ESL 63's?
Jsujo, The 63's have an impedence drop which can be difficult for some amps to handle (I think its down about 3.5 ohms in the bass area). Something to take into consideration in selecting an amp. FWIW I drove mine with a 40wt PP tube amp w/out any...
New Prima Luna Amp In Distress / Me Too
Vm8444, FWIW I have a Prologue One and a Prologue 5. I think your description of the One as being warmer is correct. I think the KT88 models are a bit more incisive, but I'm not sure how much more powerful they really are. The spec on the 5 is 36w...
