Von Schweikert VR2 mods?
Will he be able to remove the mods if you don't like their effect? If not I'd not be interested. If they are expensive mods I think I'd just invest my money in new speakers when the opportunity/inclination appears. FWIW.
How does one go about auditioning a new turntable?
You are between a rock and a hard spot if you don't have equipment presently which is capable of resolving the differences between your present and any prospective playback system. You really have to make it a move of faith based on reasearch and ...
Reference level playback
If you are truly into 'set it and forget it', buy a CDP and a lot more CD's. The horse (LP recording industry) is long out of the barn. At least in digital recording you might, but I cannot suggest how, get the industry to agree to standards and t...
Tube Pre-Amp Question
Here is away to check it out....Play some music loud. Don't touch the volume control but turn off the source. How loud is the 'hiss'? If you can hardly hear it don't be concerned its very normal. If it is loud it could effect the 'black' backgroun...
Tube Pre-Amp Question
You are probably hearing tube 'rush' from less than the quietest tubes, or you are hearing the pre-amps' intrinsic noise floor. Do you only hear this with you ear within inches of the tweeter? If so I wouldn't be concerned, its not unusual.
Tube amps and speaker ohms
Bartockfan, FWIW, while you are doing your research factor in a couple of more issues, or at least possibilities....1) Its not some much whether it's 4 or 8 ohms for a well made PP tube amp, its about the impedence curve and the minimum impedence....
Reference level playback
First let me admit that I did not try to digest your entire post for pratical personal reasons. That said, I could be convinced you are right in selecting the 83db play back level for a reason that vinyl lovers never discuss, much at least. That i...
One's trash is someone else's treasure
"I don't feel that this is how it was intended".I think you are absolutely correct. And while it did not produce a positive result for Germini, I think it did stimulate a lot of interesting posts. The ones I found most interesting were the posts b...
Most resolving, transparent amps.
Got a dumb question. How can I tell (without actually listening and evaluating synergy, especially with speakers) if an amp is in fact going to be 'transparent'? Are amps universal in application? If, when I hear a system, I judge to be less than ...
Tube Pre-Amp Question
If the hum changes with an increase in volume it is likely that it occurs in a source/pre-amp connection, or a component part or tube in the unit that preceeds the line amplifying section of the pre-amp. I'm not familar with the VTL but if it has ...
Sweet sounding SE tube amps under $3K USED
Blindjim, FWIW, I recently bought a Cayin A100T out of curiosity. I've only had it for a month or so but so far I'm not only pleased but surprised. While this is an integrated amp it has in input for a preamp which bypasses the 'front-end' of the ...
Down-firing Sub makes floor rattle
Yes, it makes sense. You sub rolls off gradually above 39hz, your main speakers roll off gradually below 56hz, and the combined energy from both speakers between 39 and 56 hz will equal the out put on either speaker alone at the roll off frequency...
Down-firing Sub makes floor rattle
I think I've got some bad news for you. The vibrations that are being transmitted to your floor are more likely than not airborne, even that may seem counter intuitive. A down and dirty check - put your hand on the sub when its making the floor 'r...
One's trash is someone else's treasure
Mechans, FWIW explaining the morality or humanality to folks who might be anti seminites is about as vacuous as explaining the value of generousity to 'Yankee Traders'. They are not only insensitive to your comments they actual take pride in their...
Am I going crazy or?
Mr T, If we don't know the selling price of our stuff how can we figure out the value of our assets, our net worth? Where else can we get (more) accurate appraisals. Of course its our business! Or perhaps just a curious distraction.......... Ever ...
