Reference level playback
Bob, the last thing I wanted to do was start a pissing contest. But, you have a theory. You want folks to take it and yourself seriously. I asked, what I thought were pertinent questions. I think of these as threshold questions not as the foundati...

Bob, If you want to compare yourself to some of the great mis-understood you might have more credibility if you spelled their names correctly. Its Galileo. :-)BTW Re: "....start off listening at one setting. Is your system good at that level". How...
The most romantic jazz ballads, nocturn or blues
Houston Person recordings on High Note label are prime romantic sax.Andre Previns recordings on Telarc are also fine dinner jazz as well featuring his piano. Shirley Horn's Verve recordings are great low key piano trio. Her voice and piano playing...
Most resolving, transparent amps.
Marco, I think that is a fair definition of 'transparency' in fact it is probably the most appropriate one. I always get confused about the difference between transparency to the recorded sound and transparency to the sound live, except when I've ...
Tube amps and speaker ohms
Trelja, Sure glad you can read thru my lack of editing skills. For others, last words in 1) "(curve of the amp)" should read (curve of the speakers). Glad I don't get paid for this! :-)
Most resolving, transparent amps.
"How do any of us judge...."Marco, I simply use one of those old forked sticks used to find water wells. Amazing devices! :-)Don't take my post personal, it had more to do with the premise of the thread than anything else. In your system that amp ...
Von Schweikert VR2 mods?
Will he be able to remove the mods if you don't like their effect? If not I'd not be interested. If they are expensive mods I think I'd just invest my money in new speakers when the opportunity/inclination appears. FWIW.
How does one go about auditioning a new turntable?
You are between a rock and a hard spot if you don't have equipment presently which is capable of resolving the differences between your present and any prospective playback system. You really have to make it a move of faith based on reasearch and ...

If you are truly into 'set it and forget it', buy a CDP and a lot more CD's. The horse (LP recording industry) is long out of the barn. At least in digital recording you might, but I cannot suggest how, get the industry to agree to standards and t...
Tube Pre-Amp Question
Here is away to check it out....Play some music loud. Don't touch the volume control but turn off the source. How loud is the 'hiss'? If you can hardly hear it don't be concerned its very normal. If it is loud it could effect the 'black' backgroun...
Tube Pre-Amp Question
You are probably hearing tube 'rush' from less than the quietest tubes, or you are hearing the pre-amps' intrinsic noise floor. Do you only hear this with you ear within inches of the tweeter? If so I wouldn't be concerned, its not unusual.
Tube amps and speaker ohms
Bartockfan, FWIW, while you are doing your research factor in a couple of more issues, or at least possibilities....1) Its not some much whether it's 4 or 8 ohms for a well made PP tube amp, its about the impedence curve and the minimum impedence....

First let me admit that I did not try to digest your entire post for pratical personal reasons. That said, I could be convinced you are right in selecting the 83db play back level for a reason that vinyl lovers never discuss, much at least. That i...
One's trash is someone else's treasure
"I don't feel that this is how it was intended".I think you are absolutely correct. And while it did not produce a positive result for Germini, I think it did stimulate a lot of interesting posts. The ones I found most interesting were the posts b...
Most resolving, transparent amps.
Got a dumb question. How can I tell (without actually listening and evaluating synergy, especially with speakers) if an amp is in fact going to be 'transparent'? Are amps universal in application? If, when I hear a system, I judge to be less than ...
