Last time you felt that "tingling" sensation?
A 10 year old girl, Jackie Evancho, a finalist on "America's Got Talent" is just incredible! I just heard her over my computer speakers. She has the voice of a fully mature woman and uses it beautifully. I got chill's. This girl is really somethin...
Your Personal Soundtrack
Generally I enjoy classical music for the solo piano in the mornings, classical music for the orchestra in the early evenings, and jazz for small groups and vocalists during the day, mostly as background for other activities. This is all subject t...
Best recordings of Debussy piano music......
FWIW, I am unaware of any Debussy recordings which are of any special 'audiophile' recording quality. If I want a demo piano recording I go elsewhere. Of the newer recordings of Debussy I think Ogawa's recordings on BIS are excellent. The performa...
How is Mid Fi defined?
Mid-Fi is anything anyone can buy at a Big Box store. Same product sold by a boutique store automatically becomes Hi- Fi. :-)
Tungsol KT-88 reissue vs EH KT-90
New re-issue Tung Sol KT88's? I've had 6550's and heard of KT120's, but I missed the KT88's. Where can I get some info on this? Thanks..........
Why do old tubes sound better than current tubes?
Tvad, You are right. I did read too much into it I think.New production (or recent productions) I have found a place for: SED 6550, SED EL34, SED 6L6GC, and SED KT88's (I really like SED's)Re-Issue Tung-sol 6550 (in one amp)JJ and NOS Tesla 6922's...
Why do old tubes sound better than current tubes?
Tvad, Forgive me for not writing a book about my stuff and tube experience. No one would be interested, even you. Talk about a cost/benefit ratio! :-)However if I see a post where I can knowledgably recommend a specific new production tube to get ...
New To Tubes Advice Needed
If you are bent on moving ahead with tube experimenting and you're a fundamentally happy with your unit as it is just try changing the smallest/cheapest tube first. The power tubes will usually effect a larger change, but are more expensive and in...
Why do old tubes sound better than current tubes?
IMHO the blanket pronouncement "NOS tubes always sound better than new production" is the mantra of salesmen and the deaf. That they can be, for sure. But as often only have that potential if they actually are any good, as in not used up and/or no...
raysonic 128 vs 168
These were both reviewed by 6.moons. As I recall the conclusion was that there was little sonic to differentiate them. The big plus was the addition of a VC and the ability to connect the 168 direct to an amp. I have had a 128 for over 3 years now...
Is the color in the amp , the preamp, the souce?
I like Almargs explanation - clear, concise, and responsive. But, for a broader view, I really like Bob Bundus comments. For me, they represent a seasoned view on the subject of system synergy, i.e. getting it to sound as you would like it.FWIW I ...
What makes strings sound "sweet"?
Agree with Al. Fundamentally I think it has more to do with mic placement than anything else. Close microphones reproduce high frequencies and low level overtones that we never hear live. Can't think of a single occasion when I attended a live per...
A phono amp that beats the MFA Magus's phono?
A PS. A new revelation that aught to really impress Allenwright. Another phono pre of his design was just advertised for $925 (not mine) and it comes with 100 and 470 ohm loads!. Go figure. :-)
6922 tube recommendations
Sballs, Glad you're happy with Joe's Tube Tore. It is a nice starting place. But consider that it doesn't include any new production tubes which have varying tonal qualities and, if noise is your only real issue, that is still obtainable from some...
A phono amp that beats the MFA Magus's phono?
Hi Clio, I've been fortunate (or cursed perhaps) with an old ARC SP10 which allows loading on the fly. Obviously I've had many cartridges, TT's, etc to play thru it. That is where I'm coming from. IMHO a system is successful only when you have fou...
