A phono amp that beats the MFA Magus's phono?
Allen, How ironic. That JLTi phono stage is advertised for sale today on the 'Gon. Interesting that the manufacturer must have deviated from your design. It has provision for loading built in. Actually, many other phono stage manufacturers incorpo...
A phono amp that beats the MFA Magus's phono?
First thing to do is get the impedance load between the cartridge and the pre-amp matched. The Magus has a nominal impedance of 47K which is fine for most MM cartridges but not for most MC cartridges which run best somewhere between 500 and 100 oh...
The CD player is dead.......
ROTFLMAO. Contrary to the movie title, "One Flew Over The Cuckoo Nest", I'm no so sure anyone got away. :-)This thread is too too much!
A phono amp that beats the MFA Magus's phono?
I have a Magus also so I have a few questions for you to consider before you get another pre-amp.1) You are using a MC cartridge (I assume - I don't know the Koetsu Black). Have you used resistors to match its output impedance (plug in types)? If ...
Speaker isolation or absorbtion - what is best?
Some speakers vibrate (resonate) at certain frequencies. Some do not do so, noticeably, at any frequency. (I just use the hand test.) If you want to effectively drain this resonance, assuming you could do so at all, you need to know the frequency ...
Vintage Yugoslavian made 12ax7 tubes for ARC
I use "Yugo" tubes in a couple of pieces of equipment. They are also known as EI and were made by EI. There are more than one model 12AX7. The one most folks refer to has a long grey plate and is modeled after a Telefunkin. A very nice clean/clea...
Room acoustics how ? My image is not centered
A WAG. Not enuf info to tell for sure, but my guess is that the tubes were biased by VAC when they had possession of the amp and the tubes were in the correspondingly numbered sockets. ARC always does this for example when the amp is sold new or i...
Best high-efficiency speaker under 10K
Consider Silverline Bolero's. 92db and easy to drive (impedance curve wise). Dynaudio drivers including the Esotar tweeter. Full range and very smooth FR. Polite upper-mid range makes them non-fatiguing but they remain very revealing non-the-less....
Genelex Gold Lion KT-88 reissued tubes
Flyfish2002, First, consider that the KT120 has only just recently hit the market. Other than its rating there is little to substantiate a recommendation for 'reliability'. But, the spec's are impressive and I can understand why Chris would recomm...
Why I like my home system better than live music
Dracule1, I don't think either experience is better, at least not for me. I don't fret too much about those who want to argue about 'live v canned'. That is stale at best. :-)I happen share your music preferences and I too enjoy listening to music...
looking for tube info
I'm guessing that you are now getting a fairly mellow sound lacking any sense of dynamics and crispness, i.e. an overall dullness. With new tubes you should expect a marked increase in dynamics and detail. Tighter bass and extended highs. FWIW I u...
Raysonic CD168 connects directly to Power Amp
I've used a Raysonic 128 thru a passive line stage in an integrated amp and thru a couple of different active line stages to the same amp. The latter sounded better to my ears. FWIW, so far I've used Amperex 7308, EI 6DJ8's (Telefunkin wantabe's),...
PayPal Alternative? - What's your opinion?
PayPal may not be all that it could be, and it is very expensive for what it does, but in my experience it is not only convienient, but also does provide a degree of recourse if you run into trouble with a sale where, for example, a seller is flak...
Do all good interconnects sound the same?
Sanders is right. If your goal is to pass the signal encoded in the software, well designed wires will pass it (nearly) unscathed. All you need are components, speakers and room/set up, as well as well trained ears, to realize the perfect replicat...
FM antenna for the attic?
That is it!
