In Room Frequency Response Measurements
One has to wonder what they did to compensate for the natural roll off of the highs that would exist. Cone speakers droop fairly fast as the distance increases. Not so much for panels/electrostats I think. I recall many years ago trying to get FFR...
Speaker grills?
Speaker grills can affect the high frequencies which IME is most noticeable in a reduction of an otherwise excellent sound stage. Some grills/clothes can further dull the sound and/or create distortion from reflections off the grill frame edges. B...
How do you judge your system's neutrality?
"A camera has only one eye"It hasn't always been so, but beyond the novelty of stereo cameras and viewers, it passed and mono prevailed. Interesting that the depth it provided was seen for what it was, yet in audio some folks still think more can ...
Tube newbee question
A gaseous blue glow in KT88s and 6550s in itself is not a bad thing. It is normal to some degree or another and its absence is also normal. The amount of gaseous blue glow varies from tube to tube. What would concern me is that it is fluctuating w...
matched quads, one dead, then what?
Mlsstl is correct assuming you actually needed a matched quad to begin with. If you have to manually bias each tube in your amp, you really don't need a matched set. The biasing process will take care of variations. Matched don't hurt though.
"They are here" vs. "You are there"
Learsfool, FWIW, I did not say that musicians, or for that matter non-musicians, didn't have some interest in audio. I referred to 'high end' audio in the context that we use that term. In my mind, those that use the term high end, myself included...
Tube maintenance for Audio research sp-16 pre-amp
Although you didn't make it clear I'm going to assume that the problem only arose in one channel (when it arose). If it occurred in both channels each time this solution wouldn't apply. I think - you've got a bummer tube, or two. The switching aro...
"They are here" vs. "You are there"
FWIW, I sort of agree with Byron's last paragraph, but mostly wherein he stresses the importance of 'resolution'. Not so much neutrality, which for me is as much about tonality as anything else, but this is a can of worms not worthy of discussion ...
"They are here" vs. "You are there"
Al, I think your comments make a lot of sense. However how do you think this plays out for folks who want to use horn, panel, or line speakers? For example I've heard some folks say that some horn speakers can be 'forward' compared to well designe...
Last time you felt that "tingling" sensation?
A 10 year old girl, Jackie Evancho, a finalist on "America's Got Talent" is just incredible! I just heard her over my computer speakers. She has the voice of a fully mature woman and uses it beautifully. I got chill's. This girl is really somethin...
Your Personal Soundtrack
Generally I enjoy classical music for the solo piano in the mornings, classical music for the orchestra in the early evenings, and jazz for small groups and vocalists during the day, mostly as background for other activities. This is all subject t...
Best recordings of Debussy piano music......
FWIW, I am unaware of any Debussy recordings which are of any special 'audiophile' recording quality. If I want a demo piano recording I go elsewhere. Of the newer recordings of Debussy I think Ogawa's recordings on BIS are excellent. The performa...
How is Mid Fi defined?
Mid-Fi is anything anyone can buy at a Big Box store. Same product sold by a boutique store automatically becomes Hi- Fi. :-)
Tungsol KT-88 reissue vs EH KT-90
New re-issue Tung Sol KT88's? I've had 6550's and heard of KT120's, but I missed the KT88's. Where can I get some info on this? Thanks..........
Why do old tubes sound better than current tubes?
Tvad, You are right. I did read too much into it I think.New production (or recent productions) I have found a place for: SED 6550, SED EL34, SED 6L6GC, and SED KT88's (I really like SED's)Re-Issue Tung-sol 6550 (in one amp)JJ and NOS Tesla 6922's...
