Preamp or Not
Espoverload, A cheater plug is a plug with the old fashion 2 blade connector with the big round ground blade removed. You plug your 3 blade PC into it then you plug it into you outlet. While it is always nice to have one in the drawer to use if you...
Help identifying Tuner noise
Kennythekey, Simple minds = simple solutions! What do I know. Obviously not much. :-)Sorry about that....................
Preamp or Not
Espoverload, I briefly revisited your earlier thread in which I participated. Mihalis sort of mirrors my thoughts here. I though you had solved your noise problem when you used some XLR connectors on your amps? Not so?One thing that might be helpf...
Help identifying Tuner noise
Simple. Either the tuner is not sensitive enuf to pick up a weaker signal, usually coming from a distance station, or the station is broadcasting a weak signal to begin with, or both. I have both a weak station and a tuner (Perreaux) with less tha...
Mechanical buzz coming from the chassis
Sounds like transformer vibrations/hum. If you can, try mass loading the case, or the transformer with something heavy, lead shot in a bag for example. This might help a lot. BTW, if it is transformer hum it could be a problem with the transformer...
ARC LS22 and pre tubes
Jiceman, FWIW in my SP10 I used 6h23s (low noise/rugged) in the critical positions but I found I can put 'colored' tubes in the cathode follower positions (which do not add any gain and are less demanding on noise issues). I long ago gave up tryin...
Blind Shoot-out in San Diego -- 5 CD Players
Wow. Are we all bored (or boring) or what. IMHO this 'shoot out' was always a very flawed attempt at a double blind test. For a long list of reasons! And that was, or should have been, obvious to anyone reading the thread. Perhaps interesting thou...
Preamp or Not
Anticipating the sonic results of driving amps direct with a CDP/DAC is really a crap shoot I think. I have a Wadia 302CDP. It is not bright tonally speaking but so far with the amps I have connected it to the tone was clinical and it benefited fr...
Vibration Theory - Isolate or Drain?
Stanwall, I think you hit the nail on the head when you say 'works' means changing the sound. Good point! I notice one fella sez he likes his phono cartridges when they are not torqued too on the headshell very tightly. Obviously he likes the soun...
Vibration Theory - Isolate or Drain?
Rakuennow, Please don't confuse audio with mechanical engineering stuff. Audio is about listening, not reading! :-) Audio is really a black magic, all about subjective listening to your components in your home where the results often defy either g...
Music Reference RM Mono?
One of the best things about mono's is that they are much lighter and you don't need a crane to help you move high power SS class A or Tube amps around. For lower power though, stereo will serve most folks well, except for the few that have associ...
Vibration Theory - Isolate or Drain?
You will not get a consensus here. FWIW IMHO things like sorbothane are far more efficient in absorbing energy and does so much closer to the source of the vibration than other things used. Conversely transmitting the vibrations thru metal cones, ...
Audio Supports
IMHO, the only valid reason for using three feet instead of four is that it makes it a whole lot easier to level the component, something that is very important for TT's and speakers. I agree that it makes things unstable and for that reason I wil...
Humming and static noise, Plinius SA 100 MkIII
Maybe it is time to think about your source of electricity. What other things do you have on the same line? I have both dedicated lines as well as regular outlets in my audio room. While I do not have an RFI problem such as yours, the dedicated li...
Humming and static noise, Plinius SA 100 MkIII
I agree with Ngjockey, I think your source of noise is external to your components. Sounds like your PC's/IC's are picking up some RFI.
