Al, your 'todays cost' comparison does much toward relativity. There are vintage products that can be reconditioned that will play well against modern equipment at similar price point. Not saying I have experience with many of them, however I hold...

My primary system is of modern vintage and primarily digitally based though I have a Sonograph turntable connected. I plan on using the ST-70 in a 2nd or 3rd system. I can't help but believe that a refurbished ST-70 with a PAS-3 pre wouldn't make ...
8-16 ohm budget speakers
Robinhood, I have a friend who owns the Klipsch Heresys. Plan on taking amp to his house to give that combo a listen. Also been considering getting a PAS 3 to couple with it. I would prefer to find a pair of monitors for my purposes. Soix, I have ...

I am in the process of establishing a vintage system  Currently have an AR XA turntable and a refurbished, however original stock, Dynaco ST-70 amp. Looking to buy a pair of sensitive 8+ ohm speakers. May use a passive pre.
The next step to a better system
Sorry,i was confused with the 851C.  I also believe using the 851D as DAC with your Onkyo would be an improvement. Use a quality 1.5 meter coax cable. In as much as I believe the 850D represents good value at your quoted price, if you are not inte...
Tube Amp for about a grand?
Is it possible to run 2 of the audionotes as mono amps?
The next step to a better system
Seems like a great deal on the 851D! Upgrading your CD player and allowing for computer access in one box. Minimizes cable needs also. Does this unit have USB input?
The next step to a better system
Just had an after thought, I believe your HK has a DAC and coax input. Is that true? If so, you could purchase a USB/SPDIF converter and run it directly into your amp as a way to get into computer audio inexpensively. For streaming internet radio ...

What would you consider as a budget for a DAC? You will need a coax input for your CD player (thinking it has coax digital out) and asynchronous USB for computer.   I currently playback only redbook CD quality files, wether via computer or disc pl...
Have the Golden Ear Tech 7's but considering a speaker a fuller sound and also musical
Sunnyjim, just saw this thread after responding to the Sphinx issue. I agree with freediver that your issue may be the synergy between amp and speakers. It might be that you would be happier with the 7s driven by a different amp. Is it possible fo...
Vandersteen 2xx - 100,000 units?
I owned the original model 2 made in the late 70s. A very enjoyable full range speaker bought for $400 used. Richard offered to buy them back in 1988 in exchange for the latest version. I did not take him up on that however.
Upgrading the "original " Rogue Sphinx integrated amp to the new version 2 (v-2)??
Sunnyjim, I have been away for several days traveling. I like your thinking regarding making a significant upgrade. Given that you seem happy with your Sphinx and have owned it 4 years you could keep it a couple more without it losing much value t...
Recommendation for Integrated Amp with Tone Controls
I owned the Vincent sv-226, little brother to the sv-236. It was a great integrated. Wish i never sold mine.  A used 236 at $1000 would be on my short list if in that market.

You have a great system to start with. Prior to expending dollars, I would take the time to listen to different systems and get an idea of what your sonic preferences are. Ones best system/$$ is that one tuned towards ones own preferences. What yo...
DO I SELL OR DO I KEEP
As a followup, could you please provide us with a budget you might consider to accomplish your goal?
