cd player or computer with dac The source makes a huge difference.I gave up on cd players a while ago. Instead I have a Eastern Electric minimax DAC ($750) connected to my imac (already had it), with a $70 Silflex glass toxlink cable. Ripped CDs to itunes.Saved big bucks on a h...
CD/lossless versus iTunes & Amazon downloads CD/lossless sounds very good. MP3 downloads from I tunes and other sources are compressed and don't sound nearly as good. Although, like cds, the sound quality varies. With a better system, I've tended to avoid downloading, unless you find somethi...
modest towers with high WAF for living room? The Aerial 6's are wonderful if you have the power to drive them. Alternatively, the Spendor S5e/A5 is very nice and a little easier to drive. I've owned them both.
Best Bang 4 the $ Intergrated Amp You might look into an Exposure 2010s or s2. New at the top end of your budget. The Creek 5350 is also a good choice, as would be something from Rega.
How does the sound change as power cables burn in? Initially a new cable will sound dull/flat, then it will get bright/strident for a number of hours as it opens up. Finally things with smooth out.Regardless, you can pretty much tell the sonic signature of significantly different cables right out ...
glass toslink does work I recently switched to glass (Silflex $60) and made a big difference vs. the $20 'good' quality plastic.
Small family living room floor-standing speakers? If you can pick up a used pair of Spendor S5e's, I highly recommend them. Alternatively, the new A5 (same speaker essentially) can be had used for around $2k.
New HT - Separates Upgrade Options? Wow, you've got quite an assortment of stuff. If you are going 7.2 with decent 2 channel balanced bypass and current HDMI video switching, you are looking at big bucks.Personally, I think all of the room correction software is garbage, so I wouldn...
looking for upgrade suggestions-- more soundstage I think you should consider selling the 352 and moving up the ladder. Look at integrated amps from Creek, Exposure, Rega, Musical Fidelity etc. Pretty easy to find in you price range.
Can a new DAC help me? Outboard dacs only pass 2 channel sound, not multichannel. Your current set up passes TrueHD lossless as is, using the DAC in the Sony and passing a multichannel lossless signal to your Yamaha. That's as good as it gets. HDMI is just a convenience ...
Thoughts on Sharp's Aquos 70" LED TV? I have the 60" 820 model. Very nice. Assume the same guts. Get's my OK. Just needs lots of tinkering to get the colour nice. Fortunately there are lots of setting. Out of the box it looks pretty bad.
Power cords, AC line conditioners---preferences? I've been playing around with power cables for a while now. I've settled on Cardas Golden and Golden Reference. Nice musical sweet sound, not to all tastes, but work for me. Certainly a step up from van den hul mainstream, DH labs etc.A good choic...
speakers for 24/96 audio Very few people can hear above 15-16khz. I think the idea of higher frequency content is to ensure what you can hear is clear and clean.I don't think high end roll off has anything to do with 24/96 vs. 16/44.
Amp more important than speakers? I think the point is a well designed speaker (at any price point) will always benefit from better upstream components, including the amp. A lot of people make the mistake of buying expensive speakers and then match them with mediocre electronics. ...
I got the USB DAC per everyone's sugguestion BUT.. I think the Wired 4 Sound DAC 2 is probably the least expensive USB based DAC that can handle higher than 14/48. |
