Endless debate: monitor + sub vs floorstanding
I'd vote for the sub route. Although full range speakers are great, they do take some grunt to keep the bottom end in control, plus placement becomes more of an issue. A sub gives you some flexibility in bass volume and placement.
Looking for help with speaker upgrades...
My choices would be Aerial 6 (front ported) or Spendor A6 (bottom ported). I'm sure there are lots of other great choices.
Rowland preamp to Audiolab integrated
Save up and get the two Rowland pieces together. You'll be spending money on the pre and not be very happy with the result, so you'll just end up going for the power anyway.
Speaker cables for Harbeth monitors
I can't speak about Harbeth, but a very nice cable that works well with Spendor is LFD grainless. They are a biwire cable. I used them with my Spendors and now with Aerials.
How to read speaker sensitivity rating?
The opposite, 102 db means a sound pressure level of 102db with 1 watt of input, vs. just 78db with the same input. Not necessarily easier to drive, just plays louder with the same power. Harder to drive usually relates to the ohm rating - 4 ohm i...
Does two center channels = one stereo system
In theory, 2 centres should work as well as regular main speakers. Of course sound quality will depend on the speakers. There are a number of regular speakers using a centre positioned tweeter (Linn Ninka, JML utopia mini come to mind), so that sh...
Two Channel Amp or 5 Channel Biamp
Personally, I'd spend the money on the 2 channel amp rather than a 5 channel plus all the extra cables. Bi-amping with a pioneer as the pre doesn't make any sense to me.
Addiction to Brand
I have to admit - Aerial speakers. Owned 5s, then 7b, then 6, moved away from the brand, now back to 5's. You'll have to pry them from my cold dead hands. Nothing matches an Aerial tweeter.
Have you become too jaded with this hobby???
I used to have a $25k system and got bored with it - sold off everything and gave up on 2 channel except for a very modest one box system for my office. Decided I miss it, so set a budget of $2k per piece, built up a nice computer based system and...
newbie making first amp choice
Maybe a used Rega Brio solid state. You might also look at Jolida integrated used. Good value in a tube amp design.
Has anyone heard Rega's Isis CDP?
Heard it with a variety of amps/speakers (it was the constant). Kind of agree with Hooper, nice but didn't make me go wow, which it should at that price.
humble home theatre
For the TV's, I like LED simply because it uses 1/5 the power of plasma. I own an 820 series Sharp and like it a lot.On the audio side, tough to find a 2 band tuner built in these days. If you can live with FM only, a good all-in-one unit is the n...
What is a better speaker than Totem? for = $$$
I spent considerable time auditioning Model 1 sigs against a range of speakers. The one that really does it for me is the Aerial 5b. Silky top end that can't be beat.
consolidate audio refinement, NAD to majik ds-i?
I've owned lots of Linn stuff. Not sure how efficient your speakers are, but the linn will be quite a step down in power from the multi5. I think the Linn pre-amp section would be better than the NAD, so you are trading up in pre amps and down in p...
Small system upgrade question
Integrating a sub is a challenge. Unless you cross over at the sub, you will not realize the benefits to the mid-range, which means more cables etc.And a $500 sub is not going to be fast enough to work well with the Proacs.Leave well enough alone.
