High End Amp Price Collapse musings I once thought that high power PA and studio amps by Crown for example would be an obvious way to get the big power I thought I wanted. That was 15 years ago, since then class D came along with much fanfare but left me wanting and even the vaunted...
PSB Synchrony One Speakers and Pass XA30.5 Amp Did the PSBs ever have the vitality you want, driven by any other amp? If so you know they can do it,. Now you have to decide whether you want to design the rest of system to get that out of them. I went through that with some Focal Electras an...

Output tubes for ARC Ref 110 No I mean the opposite. From my reading, and I think you might want to research this on Audio Asylums Tube Asylum that the suffix tubes last a lot longer and are better over all than the standard meaning it is the 10,000 hr tube whereas the plain...
Output tubes for ARC Ref 110 I can confirm that the pre amp tube will have a much longer life up to 10,000 but not always 10,000hs than the output tubes usually given as 2,000 hrs. . The 6H30s should be 6H30 EB for that rating you may only get 5,000 hrs out of standard 6H30s...
Tannoy SGM 1000 is number one with a Bullet! (13 of them acutally )! I would be surprised given all the damage reported that restoration would make more sense than replacement.
PMC Fact 3 with hegel h160 or accuphase 350 Why did you choose that particular Accuphase? If you have heard it then you will know if it is a good match for you and your speakers. I don't think that the Accuphase will have any problems driving your PMCs. Whether you like the results no on...
What are the best speakers for 80's hard rock? You know Klipsch make updated versions of some of their heritage line. Heresys are the smallest speakers in that line but by no means small sounding. If they got the crossover fixed it would be an excellent choice. I own the original version, bu...
To monoblock or not to monoblock McIntosh MC275's Mono blocks are way cool. I think you'll enjoy the fact that you have them and whatever additional power overhead they provide. Running in parallel according to Almarg would appear to a benign move, in terms of SQ.
Van Alstine Trans 10RB vs. Freya Schiit. Which do you prefer and why?? After reading this thread and looking up the candidates, it's easy to see why Schiit products are appealing. What I find missing though is any discussion or comparison of sound quality and character. In my book sound quality matters and takes p...
interconnects vs speaker cables vs power cords - which make the biggest difference? IMHO the speaker cables are the most critical. I'll throw in a plug for the brand I use, Jena Cable which are simply insulated braided copper. Then ICs, I have yet to hear a meaningful difference between power cords.
Why does it take so many hours to brea in arc preamps and amps? Make two reasonable assumptions. That there is some of legitimacy to the notion of "getting accustomed to the sound" burn in.There is probably an element of the circuit undergoing real physical changes "during/over use" time as well. Thus there is p...
Budget Audiophile Looking For Amplifier Suggestions McIntosh has a signature sound that does not appeal to all of us hi fi people. Some think of it as being a notch below what really good gear should sound like despite it's universally appealing blue meters and stunning prices. It is solid stuff,...
Why does it take so many hours to brea in arc preamps and amps? After my philosophical bs, Let me agree re tube amps!
Are Ohm Walsh Speakers the Poor Man's MBLs? So can you keep the MBL speakers or are you considering buying them? Not clear on what you are saying. |
