What year did tube lose to SS
The digital media sentence was an example of a major industry shift.  I remember as a kid that we had Sherwood tube equipment, but by the time the mid 60s had gone by tube gear was not what most HiFi shops were offering.  Until fairly recently the...
Tube Life Artifacts
Philips made Mullard not the other way around. 12 years on an output tube is incredible never mind EL 84s. Time for a new set.
How often do you clean cables? And which types do you clean most often?
It's too bad that both copper and silver , both excellent conductors, oxidize.  I own one cable with a copper termination that doesn't appear to oxidize , so there is hope.
Cheap Box Sets
Re released a couple of years ago of Starker playing Bach's cello suites. That set is superb, if you like that sort of thing.
Source Mod or Preamp?
I think you are safer with a tubed preamp. I have a lot of experience with tubes and they are very good at adding dimension to your sound.  They will be very clean sounding and  not that's right not   syrupy slow and warm, using current production...
Dac: Does anyhting beat the Schiit Gungnir Multibit (Gumby) in the same price range?
How do you like it ? That's the only thing that counts.  Try it, see if you like it and decide for yourself, if it can be beat for the money.
Wife trouble
Use another room for audio. Finish your basement that's where I got sent. I did have a WAF approved system in the living room as well, but I was lucky .
Parasound JC3+
If you need an MM phono stage I can recommend that Graham Amp  2 SE.  It is inexpensive, as these things go in our hobby at  about $400.  I really like it, a giant killer in me estimation.
Looking for integrated amp to go with Spatial Hologram M4
If you really like the 3D effect and halographic  imagery then you should consider a good tube amp.  I don't know if you can get the power you want from a sub $2K amp.  That may be tricky.  If you think well I will just get a tube pre and a potent...
Audiogon needs a new category
I think most of old fogeys would consider Music Servers as a digital source and would expect to find discussions there. However there is no harm in starting a new category.  I don't know who you would ask for that.
Selling vintage components
I have read enough ads fot vintage equipment to list the following statements sellers use.You can always rely on the phrase sold "as is , as pictured" with no warranty expressed etc. with no returns accepted . It is a vintage piece, as such, there...
I need a good Preamp
What type sound are you hoping to achieve.  Did you like the McIntosh sound, or are you really aiming for something else.  The ARC and the Cary sound very differently.
Short Lifetime for 6NS7 Tubes
Confessions of a 6SN7 addict-I collected a large variety of 6SN7s to serve as drivers in my first foray into modern tube amps (a Consonance M100 + ). In that role they demonstrated their differences some quite distinct and some only nuanced. The s...
AES SET2 monoblocks by Cary Audio
There is almost nothing about AE by Cary at all. I own the plain (modded now) AE-3 preamp which uses 6SN7s .  I couldn't even find the model you are considering. Are you really looking for the AE-211 Monoblocks or something like it, that is a stan...
Your Favorite Top 10 tuners all time
Years later- I received a gift from a foreign graduate student  who was studying electronics.  He knew I liked Sherwood tube gear from the early 60s so he rebuilt and refurbished a Sherwood tuner for me.  Man is that a fine sounding tuner.  It is ...
