Buying the right tool (aka gear) the first time...
This is a wide open set questions with multiple correct answers. Almost all of which depend on you. You’ll likely get responses from many different perspectives, and it’s very likely no one will be able to give advice that’s 100% correct and defin...
Looking for a SS integrated Amplifier recommendation going into a new system
Sound characters important to me are good detail, natural, but can be a bit warm, sound stage, air, and the ability to reporduce the original recording. I invest lots of effort to improve my source, and I am hoping the result will show through the...
The return of the DIYer
If you’re happy with the stuff you hear in the stores and can afford to buy it, there’s likely no reason to explore other options. The prospect of 40% to 50% of my audio budget going into someone else’s pockets never sat well with me, and fostered...
How do you listen?
It depends, but I usually sit in the sweet spot with my laptop and multi task.  If the music beckons, I stop and listen.
New Klipsch Jubilee, with active crossover.
They look amazing....if you like speakers the size of a small shed in your livingroom! ;-)
VANDERSTEEN model 2CE Signature...or ...SNELL Type D ?
Vandersteen for the win!
Aren’t the two main transducers, speakers and cartridge, the most important?
The transducers (speakers, phono carts) tend to have more impact on tonal balance and overall sonic presentation than most components, and is a reasonable place to focus early in the game or when you want big changes, but we still hear the sum tot...
Tube Power vs Solid State Power
Tubes distort on odd order harmonics if I recall. Whereas SS distorts on even order which is less desirable to the ears. Thus, some believe the tubes sound better You're on the right track, but reversed it.  Even order harmonics are natural, an...
Tube Power vs Solid State Power
As mentioned watts are watts, but I do think there are a couple of other potential factors to consider that may lead to the "tube watts are louder" perception. Wattage rating aside, and SS or tubes aside, well made amps tend to have better dynami...
System and speakers in a large room vs in a small room?
I think so. Mating the speakers to the room is a huge consideration in speaker selection. Large speakers tend to have more bass output with lower extension. Those traits are more likely to excite the resonsances and modes of a smaller room. Small ...
Top 5 Reaons to NOT BUY A TURNTABLE.
All your records belonged to your mother You haven't saved up enough allowance to buy a decent vinyl system You read an article about CD being perfect You have to get off the couch to listen to both sides You can't figure out how to balance the t...
In praise of isolation.
I have yet to try springs under my speakers, but am intrigued. Our last house had a carpeted concrete slab in the livingroom....coupling 100# speakers by spiking through the carpet to the heavy mass of the slab seemed to work well vs no spikes. Ou...
Observation: Passion vs Obsession
Excellent insights, and very true!  Been down both paths, and much prefer sticking with "Passion", and enjoying all the aspects.  Heck, the system was good enough to satisfy me 20 years ago, is better than I ever would have dreamed, and has only i...
Focal, B&W or Martin Logan
If your wife likes them (...that's huge), and you’re not opposed to whatever signature they may have, there’s enough potential there to turn it into a pretty amazing system. There are always things that can be done, and should be done to make them...
How do you listen?
Too loud can result in listener fatigue (and complaints from the residents of the house).  Too soft and it's not involving enough.  I like the Goldilocks setting ...just right...but as oregonpapa mentioned, that varies with every album.
