Thinking of adding a sub---maybe not?
That's a big room.  I'd add the subs, but suggest keeping the gain way down so it's barely noticeable, and using the lowest low pass frequency setting.  I suspect the biggest mistakes people make with subs is trying feature them, rather than just ...
Ideas to improve my system
A powered sub would be a nice addition, especially for HT. Even a fairly modest sub can work well. Most have a high pass filter to relieve your main speakers from deep bass duties, which many claim will clean up the sound of mains. Then I’d look t...
System forclassical music
It’s all so subjective, I’d suggest you take them to a few reputable dealers and see what they like the sound of. I’d focus first on speakers, and strongly suggest they try them in their room. Then find a good amp that plays well with the speakers...
Marantz AV 7005
It’s worth what someone is willing to pay.  You have a bird in hand. If you want to sell the Marantz, I’d take the offer.
Widow Needs Advice--Marantz AV 7005
After this long, I'd certainly take the offer.  Markets fluctuate, and pricing is different in every region.
Sopra 2 Bass
If your speakers are brand new, you may find that the woofer suspension needs to some playing time to loosen up to achieve their expected bass response. If they have plenty of hours already, subs are an option.
Bi-Amp - Audio Research Reference 75 SE & Gryphon Diablo 300
Bi-amping can have some benefits, but I think it’d be wise to spend some time getting familiar with the charms of your new tube amp first. Maybe do some tube rolling and find a tone you love, then later on experiment with bi-amping. Some tube amps...
What's your dream speaker?
I'm pretty happy with my system now, but will say the one system I've heard recently that got (and held) my attention had Magico S5 MkII speakers with the most recent Convergent amps and preamp driving them.
Considerations prior to your next purchase
Hearing is to audio what eyesight is to art. Most older audiophiles may not have the high frequency hearing they once did, but many tend to be far more knowledgeable and experienced at recognizing many aspects of good sound. They also tend to be m...
Buying used vs new?
Depends on the preamp. Which one?  Saving money is good....getting great equipment with your money is better.
Recommendation for amp
Willsenton R8 driving Harbeths should sound amazing.  May not meet the footprint requirements, and may not play to ear bleed levels, but should be a treat to listen to.
Advice for upgrading my system
I’ve had the chance to hear a pretty sweet, fairly high budget system a few times this year. He’s got Magico S5 MkIIs powered by Convergent tube amp and tube preamp. The system is stunning, and is the first time in a long time that I found a syste...
Advice for upgrading my system
You've got some really nice gear by most people's standards.  Depending on what specific characteristics you want to change, I'd be looking into speakers and cartridge change.  Nothing wrong with either of those in your system, but that's likely w...
nagaoka cart upgrade
The nagaoka series of carts was a revelation to me. It appears the low price is possible because they spend nothing on advertising. Thx for your note. I was wondering about the exact upgrade stylus that you did. Good to know that it works fine. ...
nagaoka cart upgrade
@ plink-plonk I also added a Nagaoka MP-150 to my system a few months back, and felt very similarly about it as you did. Unmistakable improvement to the separation, soundstage, and midrange textures. It has a more "you are there" feel to it than m...
