Thiel Owners I own a pair of 2 2's as well as four 3.5's. I am wondering, from those who have had 2.2's, 2.3's, and 2.4's what the sonic differences were as you go up the line. But even more importantly, what the problem is with the 2.3's that keeps their us...
How would you introduce tubes into this SS system? Buy a used Modulus 3A preamp, add some new tubes, and you'll think you've died and gone to heaven. Great preamp with an even greater phone stage. Preamp and tubes will set you back less than $2000. Output impedance will not be a problem with th...
Whats on your turntable tonight? Not last night, but in the last week I’ve been drawn to the singing-songwriting of Harry Chapin :Sniper and Other LovesongsPortrait GalleryLiving Room SuiteChapin was a superb storyteller, and If you ever buy or listen to only ONE Chapin release i...
Jazz for aficionados frogman - wow, that list of Paul Chambers work is impressive, and as you've said, a lot of them are classics. It made me think back and to the fact that I often used Paul Chambers as sort of a "Good Housekeeping Seal of Approval." If there was a...
ADC 26 BEST PRITCHARD CARTRIDGE EVER? or BEST CARTRIDGE EVER? I owned the 25 3-stylus set back in the mid-60's, and it was and is a great cartridge. BUT it absolutely requires a very low mass arm. Pritchard sold a light wooden gimbaled arm for it, which I used with a Thorens turntable until I mucked up the...
Just an observation here, but???????? Get a good wall mount rack, and you can handle either with little trouble.
Best vintage DD turntables from the 70's and 80's? If I remember correctly, the first Denon direct drive turntable from the late ’70’s was a stunner in looks and briefly was on the Absolute Sound’s top turntable list. The later Denon's were almost all semi-automatic .... the armless ones are rare.
For those of us over 60.. Judy Collins, Joan Baez, and Dylan (I'm 79). :-)
In search for speakers of "natural" sound Take a listen to speakers by Vanderstein or Thiel (used). Both built only with first order crossovers which provides phase coherence through the crossover regions. And since both had "music-loving" rather than "hi-fi" sensibilities they tended ...
What were your humble beginnings on the path to high end audio? Summer of 1956 as a soon-to-be senior in high school, I built a system starting with a modest Electro-Voice SP-12B in an Argus bass reflex cabinet. A Garrard RC121 with a Norelco moving magnet cartridge and an Eico HF-20 amp (built from a kit) co...
Solid State vs. Tubes - What if Transistors came first? erik....squires - the tube revival started with William Zane Johnson, but also with the review of his SP-3 in The Abso!ute Sound, which also started publishing at that time. It was TAS and its reviewers who re-discovered the pleasures of tubes an...
How do you store and catalog your vinyl? I organize first by a few categories ..... symphonies, chamber music, other orchestra, and then by composer within each group. Then jazz, singer-songwriters, early rock, test/demo records, and misc other. Within these I arrange alphabetically by...
Thiel CS2.4 to what? As the owner of six Thiel speakers, I will add my vote for keeping the Thiels and adding a sub. Just make sure that you add one that 1) has lots of options as to phase and crossover frequency, and 2) is "quick and tight" to match the Thiels. Fla...
Does hearing the best in high end audio make your opinions more valid? Glad you guys found it useful. It is the difficult path, but it lets you make relative judgements to the music, not to other gear.
Does hearing the best in high end audio make your opinions more valid? I'm a 79 year old life-long audiophile (I grew up with a state-of-the-art mono system in my fathers house) and built my own system as a junior in high school. Later while in my first job out of college I took a two year course in sound engineerin... |
