Which Nakamichi to choose?
Even the lowly CR-1A is not to be sneezed at.
Budget/value SS power amp recommendation
A couple of Outlaw M-200 monoblocks would do nicely, and should cost about $400 on the used market.  Plenty of power, transparent, and neutral. The later Adcom amps (5300, 5400, etc) are also very good and can be purchase for perhaps half of that.
Speakers under $5000 maintained a reputation for quality sound over the last 15 years.
Almost any Thiel up through the 3.6.
circle of confusion
But it doesn't change the fact that that "porthole" view was silly to begin with, and UGLY!
WD 40 to remove scratches on vinyl !
Last Record Cleaner is still available from The Last Factory, as well as some audio retailers.  It is expensive, but works to remove all the grit and grain of new or (some) original pressings.  Most of my records are already "Last'd" (I have been ...
New Look for Audiogon hard to work with
And UGLY to boot!
Difference between Manley Compact 100 and Compact 80 amplifiers? Problems?
Thanks, pryso.  I realized my naming error after posting.  Manley and VTL were so intertwined in the early days that I simply slipped up.  As for sequence, I know you are correct, and I managed my D90 okay.  But I am getting quite old, and am not ...
Audio Research Tube AMP Reliability
This is an old thread, but for what it is worth I owned an SP-6b and a D90 from 1980 until 2010 with zero problems.  I recently purchased an old, clapped out SP-6a and recapped it with Mundorfs ... sounds even better than my 6b did.
Difference between Manley Compact 100 and Compact 80 amplifiers? Problems?
Thanks, oddiofyl.  I've taken note.
Difference between Manley Compact 100 and Compact 80 amplifiers? Problems?
That is the way to do it, for sure.  Problem is we human's sometimes lack a bit in consistency.  I've perhaps blown the sequence once in two years, but I certainly don't want to destroy an amp (much less speakers) once in two years.
1970's Audio Research Equipment, worth having?
Put me in the ARC camp.   I hear the SP-3 and power amps driving Harry Pearson's maggies and was smitten. In 1980 I bought a demo SP-6b and D90, driving IMF monitors and stayed happily with these for 10 years until I traded the IMF's for Thiel 3.5'...
Dynavector cartridges, old and new
I don't know about recent Dynavectors, but I owned the original Dyna Ruby and in a Syrinx PU-1 arm and Linn Sondek  table, it made magic thru my Counterpoint SA-2 headamp and ARC amplification. On the other hand, I also had their first "20" high ou...
Bob Carver new tune expected
I've done a/b sonic comparisons of his TX-11 tuner vs some of the most revered high end tuners of the "golden era", and the TX-11 matches or beats them all.  The man knows musical sound quality.
Surprised
My solution is a two channel / four channel setup (center bridged) using Thiel 3.5 equalized speakers.  The four channels virtually eliminate room modes in the three rooms I've used this setup in, and the bass does truly extend down to 20Hz.  Poof...
