Vintage Speaker Choice For all but my main system I still use 14 gauge stranded wire, and have never heard a difference switching in much more expensive cables.
Vintage Speaker Choice The large Advents, particularly if you buy four (and you should get them @ $100 ea) stacked vertically, with the upper speaker upside down (a pseudo-Apolitto configuration) can outperform many $2000 a pair speakers. Go for it!
For those who've moved from "vintage" to newer units I'd try NAD and Rogue Audio. Both have integrateds in your price range. Solid state for NAD and tubes for Rogue.
corner speakers Older JBL C-34 corner horns (about $4000/pr used) would sound terrific if the corner locations work for you. And if you replace your amp, a lower power unit would do nicely. Only problem is .... these might cause you to completely tear apart yo...
Thiel Owners Wow, as an owner of two pairs of 3.5's and one pair of 2 2's, I am licking my chops to see what you come up with. I love both models, but agree they could use updating. I can just relax and listen for now .... not a bad mode to be in! :-)
An Excellent New Read: "A Brief History Of Why Artists Are No Longer Making A Living..." Ivan - a good read, thanks. Perhaps a bit rosy, but I've been on the periphery of the industry for a long time, stretching back to the late '40's when my father distributed Magnacorder's to recording studios and radio stations (and Les Paul). He...
The most important factor in soundstage imaging I think phomchick and others focusing on speaker placement and sound treatment are right on ..... I've been successful in several different spaces when I've had the flexibility to optimize. In a living area, not so easy, but usually one can figur...
How many brands use own drivers? "Old Thiel" after the 2 2 and the 3 6.
The Carver Amp Challenge and the 21st Century and it's Failure roberjerman2 - They do elicit loyalty, do they not. I was doing some work for The Abso!ute Sound in the years before they came out, and still had access to Harry Pearon's listening rooms. When I heard them, I was smitten.
Thiel Owners jon_5912 , jafant --To me it is fairly simple --- when you go to a jazz club or classical concert you hear the music. If well performed, there is absolutely nothing to create tension, stress, or even untoward focused attention. You tend to let...
The Carver Amp Challenge and the 21st Century and it's Failure tomic6012 , glad to see another Audionics fan hear. I've had a BT2 preamp and CC2 power amp off and on at three different times starting in 1980. I still have my last BT2 that I use as a backup to my Audio Research SP6. They have amazingly si...
Dynavector cartridges, old and new Dynavector Ruby was the best cartridge I owned until the Accuphase AC-2. Superbly natural .... find one in good shape today and you have a keeper.
The truth about why modern music is so awful. Sorry for the error, but the article is an Op Ed piece in yesterday's Feb 7 New York Times. I can't provide a link because it is a "fee only" site. But a library paper will do.
Looking for the best Preamp with a phono circuit built in The Van Alstine would be a good choice. So would a used Audio Research SP6 series or SP8 if you want tubes, since AR located near you could update them and still come in at a reasonable cost. These have some of the finest sounding phono stages e...
The truth about why modern music is so awful. Interesting that the New York Times had a piece this last Sunday (Feb 3) about the "loudness wars" utilizing digital compression to "destroy" music. Been a long time since I saw anything about this in the mainstream press, much less a semi-techni... |
