The nightmare of the cartridge buyer...
As long as we are on the subject of cartridges, I want to bring up LAST stylus treatment and LAST record preservative.  I started using them in 1967 or 68 when they first came out.  What they do for records  and stylus longevity seems to be pretty...

oblgny - when I lived in Port Washington I almost bought that amp when it first came out years ago.  It sounded excellent with my 3.5's.  Good find!

prof - well, at least we agree on the Thiels.  I'm a twenty-five plus year user of same, and their coherence and attention to diffraction elimination do pay imaging dividends, for sure.I also agree that the Thiels, in a decent acoustic environment...
The nightmare of the cartridge buyer...
I'm glad to find that there are other Accuphase aficionados here.  I haven't heard the AC-3 so can't comment, but in no way would I describe the AC-2 as anything but neutral in both transient response and frequency response.  Since I've started us...
Reel to reel deck directly to power amp ?
Most line-level impedances are 600-1000 ohms.  Tube amps input impedances are 50kohms to 100kohms.  Should work well.  Some solid state amps as low as 10kohms inputs .... not as much gain and frequency response issues if the nominal impedance rise...
Considering used towers under $1000..
A used pair of Thiel 2 2's will cost you less than $1000.  I'd be surprised if they didn't satisfy you.

Newbee and AudioKenisis between them have it right, in my opinion.  I've been married twice and a bachelor twice as a result, so I've had many, many chances to experiment with different rooms and setups. If you have a dedicated listening room, unde...
The nightmare of the cartridge buyer...
I haven't read every post in this thread, but I'd like to add my own perspective to the issue.  First, their is no "best" cartridge.  Only one that keeps you satisfied with the music you listen to, and as long as you can keep the "time to upgrade"...

tomthiel - Larry Staples rings a bell.  If he is on this thread then let me say "Hello, Larry" as well.  As to it being a forming experience it was.  I bought the 3.5's as much on that Kentucky experience as the dealer's showroom, since he had pul...

Thanks, Tom, for the explanation.  I think we hear the same things, but you know why whereas I just hear.  In any case, the 3.5's give me music .... I've mellowed in my old age.BTW, I was part of a small group of audiophiles who formed a listening...
Horns: Why don't they image well?
Well, you can always just put an old JBL C-31 in one corner, and forget imaging.  The music will still be there in the room with you! :-)

I'd like to add a few comments re: the discussions just a bit earlier in this thread.Tom Thiel was asked what he found so fascinating as to make the 3.5's a special speaker to him.  Beyond his personal involvement, he mentioned the seamless deep b...
Cartridge recommendations
Frankly, I'd go with the idea of (at least eventually) a better TT, and buy a used ADC XLM or ZLM body and equip it with a Shibata stylis from JILCO in Jampan.  Total cost; no more that $250, and one of the bestt mm cartridges ever made, upgraded ...
