What is proper ratio of money spent on amp/preamp/integrated vs speakers? 1:1? Elizabeth -A pair of Outlaw 200wpc 2200 monoblocks can be had used for $500. They will hang in their well into the upper reaches of amplifierphilia.
Inherited amp The Hammond transformers may be a clue. I believe in the early '50's Hammond made a brief foray into home audio essentially adopting their organ amps. Good luck in searching for info, but you might want to check out that possibility.
Well maybe it IS my hearing Rest assured that by 79 you'll probably be listening through hearing aids, as I am now. Get good ones, and they will reach reasonably flat into the lower treble range .... enough for well-reproduced recordings of acoustic music to still have a re...
What equipment have you bought this year so far ? A Denon 47F turntable and arm with Audio Technica 92E cartridge for my second system, and a Brown Audio Labs tube headamp for my main system. Anything else will have to wait for next year.
Jazz for aficionados Here are a couple of offbeat but in my opinion great jazz discs, made of of unusual duo's.* The first, which from a search of threads appears not to have appeared here yet is a SACD/CD called "Superbass 2". It is a sequel to any earlier 2006 rel...
Song (or music) you want played at your funeral. The birds in the forest as my daughter dumps my ashes from the Cessna 150.
Thiel Owners A budget system featuring 2 2's that performs way over its head!Since I downsized into my apartment last year, I have had a convenience system in my combined den-office-dining room for pretty casual listening. (My main system holds forth in the l...
Ribbon midrange pros and cons The old Heil AMT1 speakers had ribbon drivers in a semi-horn bidirectional enclosure that were pretty awesome sounding in the ribbons range, which reached down into the midrange.
Who needs a tuner? I agree with chrisoshea. If you are lucky enough to have a really well-supported public station playing classical or jazz much of the day, a good tuner (mine is a tubed Fisher FM-90B) beats being online for sound quality. Plus you can find NPR n...
Vintage Speaker Choice Zar - glad to hear about your stacked pair. Should give you lots of pleasure .... image much better than single speakers alone, plus solid frequency response top-to-bottom.
Vintage Speaker Choice For all but my main system I still use 14 gauge stranded wire, and have never heard a difference switching in much more expensive cables.
Vintage Speaker Choice The large Advents, particularly if you buy four (and you should get them @ $100 ea) stacked vertically, with the upper speaker upside down (a pseudo-Apolitto configuration) can outperform many $2000 a pair speakers. Go for it!
For those who've moved from "vintage" to newer units I'd try NAD and Rogue Audio. Both have integrateds in your price range. Solid state for NAD and tubes for Rogue.
corner speakers Older JBL C-34 corner horns (about $4000/pr used) would sound terrific if the corner locations work for you. And if you replace your amp, a lower power unit would do nicely. Only problem is .... these might cause you to completely tear apart yo...
Thiel Owners Wow, as an owner of two pairs of 3.5's and one pair of 2 2's, I am licking my chops to see what you come up with. I love both models, but agree they could use updating. I can just relax and listen for now .... not a bad mode to be in! :-) |
