Am I an Audiophile, a music lover-or both?
Listen to some small jazz combos.  You may become a jazz lover and simultaneously indulge you desires for the "slap of the drum snare. The crisp and clear sounding vocal, the quick and deep bass."
Turntable getting back to vinyl
You can do very well with used gear (and I'll surprise you) for that price or less.  Do this.Find and buy a Dual 701 or 704 turntable in good condition.Find and buy an ADC XLM II or III or a Shure V15III.Install cartridge in arm.  Track at 1.25gra...
Reference disc player...UDP 205 or Marantz?
I think what Mahler123 meant to say was that the Oppo 105D does not stream DSD from external sources.  The 205 does.  If he truly thinks the Oppo 105D does not stream DSD from SACD disks, then he is overlooking a setting in setup that allows the u...
The longest you have owned any gear?
Simple.Oldest (47 years) - Teac 4070 Auto-reversing Tape Deck.  Just had first tuneup.  Has always worked, and well.Second Oldest (42 years) - Original Dual 701 Automatic Turntable.  Survivor of a shoot-out with my Linn SP12 / Syrinx arm combo.  S...
Are future improvements in Amp/PreAmps slowing to a crawl?
My answer is "yes".  But I approach it with three factors in mind: 1) is it organically musical; 2) is it transparent, and 3) is it reliable.  I believe we essentially are there with at least some gear..
Why is good, deep bass so difficult? - Myths and their Busters
I agree with audiokinesis.  I have used Thiel 3.5's for years, which with their equalizer are flat down to 16-20hz.  The ultimate bass system: 4 or 5 of these in an ITU multichannel configuration.  Virtually all room nodes are eliminated.  Two of ...
Good Bass Recordings on CD for Subwoofer Testing
As Swingreen says, for classical use the Saint-Saens 3rd Symphony.  But not any recording.  The RCA Living Series recording with Munch/Boston Symphony includes very clean and smooth bass, right down to the 16HZ bass notes.   Some organ records may...
A new Question: Moving Magnet Cartridge To Compliment My Rock Collection
I can agree with the Grace9Ruby recommendation.  I used one for years and it does well on pop and rock.  Getting one in good condition nowadays might be an issue.
Need a preamp with tone controls!
Ditto the Acrosound and Luxman as preamps you should audition.  Alternative: Van Alstine custom modifications of Dyna PAS-3's.
Incredible deal on incredible amp
Audioman58 is spot on with his timing.  I'm a 78 year old audiophile and have been active in the used market for over 40 years.  His timing spells it out.  In addition, If you look at the trading activity across a range of gear using Audiogon's Bl...
Crazy to buy a 17 year old CD Player?
I'll second the POV of the respondent who recommended OPPO.  Both the 105 and the 205 have state of the art DACs, and upsample everything to 192/24 and play DSD in native format, including (if you wish) multi-channel analog output. I love ARC gear...
Best indoor FM antenna, your experience.
The best long distance FM antenna ever made was the APS-13 made by Antenna Products Company.  It went out of production in the early part of this century.  You conceivably could find a used one with want ads in Craig's List, Audiomart, etc.  Combi...
16 bit is good enough.....
Wolf has reminded me to add "if the rest of your system is musical and not edgy" to the above.  I agree, Wolf ... I've reverted to an updated ARC SP-6 which is more neutral than the 6B I had when it was new, and have never enjoyed my system more: ...
16 bit is good enough.....
At 78 years of age, forgive me for forgetting the punch line. There is absolutely no reason today for anybody not to have both digital playback and analog playback and enjoy both equally.  If you are an analog fan, spend a few shekels on an OPPO 9...
16 bit is good enough.....
I think the key here has been touched on, but not singled out: time-domain transient distortion, more important the higher in frequency the transient is.  Early ways of dealing with it on straight CD's were filters that sacrificed high-frequencies...
