first time vinyl
I started with a Thorens TD-160 and a Shure M-97xe for about $400 all-in and it was a great starter table. I've upgraded since, but that was a nice entre into vinyl.
Reason for buying old/classic turntables
There's a lot of BS sorounding the improvements to turntables over the last thirty years. It is, after all, a wheel, and we've had that down for 3000 years or so. Advances in bearings and damping are real, but for most applications a table that wa...
Jazz Review: Miles Davis
You forgot Miles Davis and the Modern Jazz Giants with Thelonius Monk and Milt Jackson. The first track, Round Midnight, is one of the greatest moments of jazz improv ever recorded as Monk loses the thread and Miles pulls him back in with a quick ...
Top Jazz Albums of 2008
I'll add a cheer for Roy Hargrove. Just picked it up last night. Great CD. Great bass, soundstaging and music. Can't go wrong here.
Analog Noob: I have a few questions
I'd second an old Thorens as a good starter table. TD-160s can usually be had for $3-400 dollars depending on the version. They sound good and when you want to upgrade you'll get all you're money back reselling it.
10 Levels of Turntable Mastery
TML 10 should be reserved for the fellow (or gal I suppose) who has reached a state of vinyl grace where -while he is able to do all that other stuff - he no longer pursues the last Nth of perfection and is able to simply listen and enjoy his tabl...
SOTA cosmos turntables
That sounds like a pretty huge jump in price from a $6K Cosmos. Go with the Sota.
Phono stage for newbie...
I would second the Tube Box. I've got one I'm listening to right now. Perhaps not the highest-fi, but a solid performer. Very smooth. It definately won't leave you hanging, and they're cheap.btw, I have a Rotel 1072 pre-amp that I was using the p-...
Pittsburgh / Western PA / Eastern OH
Well, actually you might be in more luck than you think. Emory has rebuilt a couple of old tube amps, Bill is a recent vinyl convert and there have been a few guys at Bill's get-togethers who build their own speakers, including one fellow who's bu...
New Audio Technica AT33EV Cart
How would the AT series differ from the OC9 that I'm using now?
Analogue Productions 2nd set of Blue Note SACD's
I don't know about the SACDs, but the vinyl is something to behold. Really really well done.
Audio Aero Capitol or Cary 303.300?
I stopped listening to my JD100 when I got a turntable. Sounds smeared and il-defined by comparison. Although NOS tubes did make a real improvement to the bass and liquidity. Its not a bad player, but its not great.
Are Dust Covers a MUST
The safety factor alone is worth having a cover.
Advice on Shure cartridge, please
I hear the new Ortofon MMs are very good and somewhat similar to the Shure.
Grading Used Lps: What to look for?
Best you can hope to do is visually grade them, clean the heck out of them before you play them and hope for the best. If you've got a good seller, he/she might let you play them in the store before you buy.
