Carbon Fiber Brushes
Not Joe, but I've been using the AIVS producs for months with no effect on the Audioquest brush.
Carbon Fiber Brushes
My Audioquest brush has lasted at least 15 years and looks like new.
Idler wheel drive vs Belt
There's no question that you can get great sound from any of the drive systems. For great music, I'll go with the Lenco. And did. Dave
Is it worth purchasing the VPI 16.5?
Just want to second Jphii's recommendation of the Audio Intelligent products. They do a fantastic job. As to record cleaners, I still prefer the simple Nitty Gritty (or Record Doctor) manual machines after some 22 years of using them.
Aries turntable with JMW -10 tonearm
Second the Dyna 10X5; am using one in my TNT/JMW10.5 and like it a lot. Sounds even better if you "denude" it and don't mind voiding the warranty.
Which Conrad Johnson pre is a step-up from PFR?
A vote for the Premier 14. I've had mine since 1996 and love it. Used ones are going for ~$1500 here and, IMO, would be hard to beat at anything near the price. Seven sets of inputs, two sets of outputs, a terrific remote, and really great sound. ...
DIY nuding of Dynavector??
Geez, I like that ... "some unknown tweaker.":-)
DIY nuding of Dynavector??
Yes. It makes a major improvement. Note that there are two screws, not one. Removal takes a steady hand, a little paitence, and needle-nosed pliers. The only downside is that you wind up with a very light cartridge. I had to add some weight inside...
Best CD Player for 800-1500 Used
Have to demur on the Conrad Johnson. I had both the transport and the tube dac, cost me about $3600, and was replaced by a Pioneer 414 DVD player at less than $300 which sounded better and was a damn site more reliable. I love CJ electronics, but ...
Best CD Player for 800-1500 Used
Second Grannyring's idea. You can't beat it for the money, or a lot more. I'm using a Tosh 3950 with an Ack dAck and when playing CDs it walks all over my $2K Sony XA777ES.
Quality RCA Switchbox
David Hadaway at DB Systems is apparently still selling his DBP-2J/5 passive switch box (5 pairs of inputs, one pair of outputs), for $88. A version with gold-plated jacks goes for $110. Just got a packet of literature from him about 3 months ago....
Basis and table mats?
A friend has a 1400 and some time ago we tried all manner of mats with it, including the Boston Audio Mat I I use on my VPI TNT, a Ringmat and a couple of homemade Spotmats. Clamps and weights included the Michell, a drilled hockey puck (not bad) ...
Love it, or Hate it ? (wood trim)
Love it UNDERNEATH some gear (those bautifully finished maple platforms from Mapleshade) and on my 1962-era Empire turntable. Don't much like it otherwise, and there's no wood on my last two pairs of speakers (Gallo Ultimates and Gallo Reference 3...
Cj experts: advice sought
Second the Premier 14. Plenty of inputs and outputs, replacement tubes (four 6GK5) are inexpensive, terrific remote and -- best of all -- great sound. I've enjoyed mine since l996 and have no plans to upgrade. They're going for around $1500 on Ago...
My Revel Studios...They're Gone...Help?
There's a pair of used Gallo Reference 3s here on Audiogon today (3/13) for $1975. They do everything you ask for, and then some. I'm not associated with the seller. Your amps should really make them sing. Good luck, Dave.
