Original ProAc Response 2 vs. Gibbon Super 8 Before you replace the Response 2s, check to see if the woofer/midrange is tightly attached to the cabinet. Both my Response 2 and Response 3 suffered from a gradual loosening of the bolts, and re-tightening them made a world of difference.
Best surprisingly good value component Gallo Reference 3 or 3.1 speakers. You can pick up a used pair here on Audiogon for well under $2,000. Gallo's "replacement" 3.5 models list for $6K and many folks, including the current Absolute Sound issue, believe they're well worth it. Great sp...
Pangea power cords I can only say I've reterminated a number of AC-14s using Furutech AC/IEC connects and think it's well worth the (considerable) effort in terms of improved sonics. Bear in mind that there are approx. 160 individual wires to deal with inside these ...
Adjust+ Vs. Fozgometer For Azimuth Adjustment I have a Fozgometer and have to say that it provides a really quick/easy/simple means of adjusting azimuth. A lot easier than trying to do it by eye or ear. And the results are impressive unless I'm deluding myself. Which has happened before :-)
Try a different turntable? Mickeyf, where do you find "actual measurements ... using conventional testing equipment" of turntables in ANY medium these days? Yeah, I use an idler TT (replinthed Lenco) after it totally destroyed an early VPI TNT. And I loved that TNT for years.
Magnepan owners : past / present I had a pair of Maggie IIA followed by the III models, trading the latter for ProAc Response 2s, then to Response 3s, Gallo Ultimates, and (currently, since 2004) Gallo Reference 3s. I heard the Models 3.6 and 20.1 at a dealer's about a year ago a...
Jazz Foundation of America This is a fine and much-needed organization. I've donated for a few years now, but your post reinforces the thought that I should up the ante.
Turntable Maintainance Nope. They weren't rubber, so no worries with the alcohol. And the boiling process actually seemed to shrink the belts. In any event, they lasted close to forever. I replaced mine once in approx. 12 years and the new ones were no more stretched or...
Turntable Maintainance Talc was recommended by VPI too. Not sure if they still do.
Turntable Maintainance I used to clean my VPI TNT belts with alcohol AND subject them every six months or so to boiling water for between 30 seconds and a minute. This was at VPI's suggestion and the belts lasted a LONG time. Dave
Is the red glow normal for 845 tubes? I agree with Brf. I've never seen anything I would call "red glow" from any of the 845s I've used in my SET monoblocks. Dave
Switcher needed db systems sells a good one, cheap (under $100) that handles 5 inputs. It's their model DBP-2J/5 Passive Switch Box.I had one of those Chase RLC-1 units and while it was fun to play with, I have to say I found it extremely colored. Dave
Which attributes do you value most? Openness/clarity is paramount for me. Not that the others are unimportant. But get rid of those veils. All of them.
How necessary is a zerostat gun? I gave mine to a friend. Although I have major static electricity problems all winter (mostly solved by a SERIOUS room humidifier) I found the Zerostat of little help. Dave
Best 845 tube out there? I said up above that I could hear no change during break-in of my 845Ts, but a friend who had heard them the first day and then again last Saturday said they were MUCH improved. Must have been gradual thing. Dave |
