RIP Lee Weiland
What a shame. I dealt with Locus Design frequently over the years and always appreciated Lee's advice and friendliness.
Need advice on CJ preamps
IMO, and apparently in CJ's opinion too, 6GK5s are not exactly world-beaters, Mullard or no. You'll note that no current model CJ uses them, unless I've missed something. My DIY audiobuddies keep trying to find a use for the ones I had left over, ...
Need advice on CJ preamps
Pops, all I can say is that you'd LOVE a 17LS2 :-)The main reason I ditched mine is that it had no polarity switch and I have very polarity-sensitive speakers. I just got tired of switching speaker cables all the time. But then I came to realize t...
Need advice on CJ preamps
I had a Premier 14 and a 17LS2. The clicking never bothered me. Very nice preamp and WAY better than the 14. But I went from the 17LS2 to an Aesthetix Calypso and like it better in every way, including the flexibility of the remote.
Any cable experts online?? Whose cables are these?
They look homemade. I've done it myself, with better-looking results.
Thoughts on current EL-34 tubes
I second the (reissue) Genelex KT-77s. Mine replaced "Holy Grail" Mullard xf1 EL34s (I also have xf2 and xf4 Mullards) as driver tubes in a pair of 845 SET monoblocks. Surprised the hell out of me. I've also tried JJ KT-77s but they're not up to t...
VPI 10.5i - Which armwands do I own?
Well sure, Stringreen, but that means every time you adjust VTF you have to RE-adjust azimuth .. and then readjust VTF ... etc. Much simpler to use the azimuth ring in the first place.

I have one, Myles. Trouble is, I have three arm tubes. Yeah, I know.

Mike told me that they make SEVEN different counterweights for these arms. Check yours. The bottom one must have a heavier counterweight than the top one. I have three 10.5i arm tubes, all different, two with 115g counterweights and one with 140g....
Is phase control switch a deal breaker for you?
There's no crossover between mids and highs and just a single capacitor between woofers and mids. They're crossover-free from (I think) 150hz up.
Is phase control switch a deal breaker for you?
It's not so much whether or not you can hear it. It's whether your speakers LET you hear it (or make it unavoidable).
Is phase control switch a deal breaker for you?
I pretty much had to have a polarity switch; My Gallo speakers are "extremely polarity sensitive," in the words of a Gallo tech. I had been switching speaker cables to change polarity, but finally gave up and bought an Aesthetix Calypso (formerly ...
Is preamp remote volume a deal breaker for you?
Deal-breaker. My last three line stages have had remotes (CJ Premier 14, Premier 17LS2, and now Aesthetix Calypso), and I wouldn't be without one. I strongly recommend the Calypso.
Inexpensive Phono Cables Recommendations
CORRECTION ON PETRA CABLES. Do NOT buy the ones now (or recently) on Amazon. I tried a pair of the new ones this morning and they are awful. I cut into one (I used to reterminate these things a lot) and found that the construction is completely di...
