Reel to Reel decks
Here's another view of "the copy sounding better than the original." And I still can't believe it, no matter how many I do. I currently have two Otari machines at hand (one belongs to a friend) along with a Teac A2300SD (Dolby). I've been dubbing ...
best cd between cary or raysonic
One thing I neglected to mention about the Raysonic, or at least the 128. It hates passive "preamps." When it was new, I took mine to try in a friend's system which uses a very fine passive controller/attenuator, and I could hardly recognize the R...
best cd between cary or raysonic
Slightly warm, detailed but not "analytical," and I always confuse "transparent" with "threadbare," so I'm not a good one to talk about it. Cables and tube rolling definitely affect the sound, but the stock tubes aren't bad at all.
best cd between cary or raysonic
I've had a Ray 128 for at least three years and consider it one of the best audio buys I ever made. It does all the things you want. I assume you've read the 6moons review. Never heard the Cary. Good luck, Dave
PS AUDIO P500 as a Turntable speed controller?
IIRC, the P500 needs to be set at 81Hz to achieve 45 RPM. I had both a P300 and VPI SDS when I was using a TNT Mk II turntable, and the P300 was substantially inferior to the SDS, sonically. when used to set turntable speed. But I think the P300 i...
What did you own in the 60's?
University 6201 speakers in Rockford cabinets, probably Viking 88 tape deck, JBL SA 600 Integrated amp, first Harmon Kardan tuner and I'm blanking on the record player(s). maybe a Presto Pirouette or Scott 710 turntable with Grado wood arm. Those ...
Kind of Blue SACD question?
Phaelon, I had that kind of problem too. It mostly went away when I switched SACD players (currently an Oppo BPD-83 SE). When I had my former player, a Sony, I was absolutely convinced that KOB and certain other SACDs were defective because their ...
Kind of Blue SACD question?
Mine sounds that way too, Phaelon. Do you have the two-channel or multichannel version? Mine is the latter. Dave
NOS Tubes In My Aesthetix Calypso
I just replaced the (probably tired) Teles in mine with Siemens ECC83s I found in an ancient Scott mono preamp. Can you believe I've forgotten what 6922s are in there? Either Amperex or Mullard. The perils of geezer memory and too much tube rollin...
Preamp inverts phase question:
Faced with a similar situation -- Otari open reel tape deck (pin 3 hot) to Aesthetix Calypso (pin 2 hot), I had XLR cables made that reflected this in the connectors. You might also have the XLR pin outs on the Marantz player rewired internally, if...
Denon DL-103R Wood Body Mod
For anyone interested, my Panzerholz pod is available. Mint. Dave
Denon DL-103R Wood Body Mod
Mingles, it was Panzerholz, not ebony. I tried it on three arms -- JMW 10.5, JMW 10.5i, and (don't laugh) that 12" cherry wood arm sold here on Audiogon. Unpodded, it's now on the wood tonearm, since I have two other carts on 10.5i armtubes. I'll ...
Denon DL-103R Wood Body Mod
No, I luckily kept the original plastic body and reinstalled it. I thought about "nuding" it and affixing it to the brass plate that is (or was) also promoted as an improvement over the stock Denon, but I'm really happy with the way it sounds now....
Denon DL-103R Wood Body Mod
As noted, I wasn't fond of my Panzerholz pod. Put it on a Soundsmith-retipped DL-103 because of all the positive comments here and elsewhere and "assumed" it was an improvement. But a friend heard one in an ebony pod and pronounced it lifeless and...
soundsmith retip questions
I have a Soundsmith retipped DL-103 and love it. I tried running it at lower VTF but wound up back around 2.5g. I also use the Magic Eraser plus a soft bristle brush. Sonically it's a MAJOR improvement in every way over the original conical stylus.
