how much were cassettes in the 80s and 90s? did they get cheaper as the 90s went on?
I worked in audio retail back then, there is no exact retail price as it depended on what deal the store got and what sale price we put on them. Retail, there were prices for single, three packs and boxes of 10 for sale, wholesale we’d sometimes b...
Favorite conductors for composers
Karajan for Beethoven, the 6th, 7th, excellent. He takes great care for the 'less famous' ones as much as for the 5th, and of course the 9th. But honestly, half the fun of listening to classical is comparing how different conductors interpret vari...
8-Tracks and Open-Reels: Who’s Got ‘Em and Whatcha Got?
@fuzztone Yep, still have about 100 mix tapes I made in the 70-80's on a Nak. with Maxell tapes. Still sound fine. A friend of mine used to make 8-track recordings, but finally gave up when he kept recording over the beginning of the tapes. Pre-re...
Help me decide on first turntable purchase
I basically went though the same thing to get back into Vinyl. I went with the Rega 6 and their MC, as it avoided all the setup issues and matching, etc. It was high enough 'high-end' to satisfy a jump back into vinyl, without going over board. ...
I need quiet as much as music sometimes so help me please
Although most Bose stuff is really bad compared to other equipment, their noise-canceling headphones are the best noise-cancelling have found - I tried many and spent good money trying. Why? They still hold some of the best patents for noise-cance...
Upgrade Time
I had Mcintosh separates for years, went with a Luxman integrated just last year (I could have gone Hegal and others, but that's another story as to why). I find it sounds way, way better, however to be fair, my Mac was getting quite old. Anyway, ...
Is there a reason why type 3 tapes didn’t catch on?
I was in the audio business back then. They were very expensive compared to everything else and then Metal tapes came out soon after, which if you were going for the best sound for cassettes and pay good money for them, you'd just go for the metal...
Budget External DAC Recommendations
I have the Vault2 and upgraded to an outboard DAC to one of  the higher-end PS Audio DACs. Well worth it. I would say in my opinion, spending $4-500 might get you a little improvement, as again, the Bluesound DAC isn't bad. But I'd suggest holding...
Does music give you longevity?
As long as you stay away from Audio Forums, you'll live a long, long time.
How important is it to have identical speaker cable length?
Just make sure they are the same color....
Stem Player
I’ll believe it when I hear it. Although there is already various software that can do that, it’s not very good with lots of cross talk. If he can fund-build one with no cross-talk between instruments, and also voices, that would be a game changer...
surround processor?
I have a 5.1 channel MC-12 I no longer use. I’ve been meaning to post and sell it. I loved it for surround sound, nothing close to it, very flexible, an amazing pre-amp for that use. Matches well with any high quality amp. 2-channel was good, but ...
Speakers for triode tube amps
I have SS Luxman components and have the Harbeth 30.2, if you don’t want another speaker with similar sound as Harbeth, like the P3s, try Totem bookshelf’s. I still have the older Rainmakers and they are “faster/punchier” in their sound then the H...
What are your top 5 Billboard top 10 songs of the 1970"s?
Midnight at the Oasis - Maria Muldaur....Number 6 in 1973.
Another must have for all you McIntosh Fanboys!
I'd get it for $18.00, not  $1800! Of course, you'd have to spend another $2K to get a power conditioner and isolation pucks.....
