One big reason why brick and mortar high end audio dealers struggle.
I am also in the Bay Area and also familiar with those stores. The one who said he charges $250 - I was floored when I walked in and he told that. I had cash with me and wanted to listen to Harbeth speakers, Never did get to listen to them. All he...
DAC with programmable chip(s)
Your looking for a DAC like the PS Audio Direct Stream, look for DAC's with FPGA. JUst FYI, I went with a FPGA DAC since it can be upgraded for many years as the designer works to improve it.
One big reason why brick and mortar high end audio dealers struggle.
When I said “all a store can offer is service” it means demo’ing audio equipment, and offering easy trade-ins and easier returns. And I’ve run audio stores myself. Yes, they can run them anyway they like, they just won’t be successful or profitabl...
One big reason why brick and mortar high end audio dealers struggle.
I’ve many times walked into a store with thousands in cash ready to buy (not just audio, once it was for a Porsche SUV!) and walked out with nothing. The ONLY thing brick and mortar stores have to offer over the internet is service. And most don’t...
Forum admiration and requested guidance
For your comment about streaming. I was purely vinyl until I got a Bluesound. Yes it’s on the low end of good streaming, but it’s a great way to start and get comfortable with streaming. Start with on and  get to understand streaming. It’s easy to...
Looking for a SS integrated Amplifier recommendation going into a new system
OP- I have the 590AXII, Nothing against Pass or Hegel as I was able to listen to them also,  just liked the features and sound a bit more and the phono pre (MC for me) in it is fantastic. FYI, Luxman rates it 30 watts pure class A, some reviews ha...
Looking for a SS integrated Amplifier recommendation going into a new system
I went with Luxman, they have both A and AB. My speakers are only 87db efficient,  but can easily get driven to 90+. I listen to everything, but female vocals and Jazz were important to me. There are plenty of great choices, I choose Luxman over o...
What were the radio stations of your youth that helped you on your music/audio journey?
WNEW NY - Allison Steele, and the rest of them. There was a great college station WFMU.
How do you listen?
CBD with a touch of THC. Although I agree with arch2 also. Selling your kids helps, but might be illegal depending where you live.Seriously, I spend 80% moving around, only 20% is sit down, focused listening.
Thinking about a McIntosh Preamp
I can’t tell what the pairing would sound like, but I love having tone and loudness controls when listening at low volumes. It may not be “pure” but so what. Go for it. I have mixed and matched McIntosh amps with other pre’s and have not had an is...
What Monitors would you pick for my new office (bookshelf) >>
I’ve used both Harbeth and Totems that way. Totems are a little bit “faster” sounding and a little less bass, the harbeths are a bit warmer. They are also front ported which helps the bass.
Recommendations for Speakers that can be used close to the rear wall.
I have to agree with Russ69, no matter what you get, you will lose a lot. I can make two suggestions, first is not to go with a rear port. Second, most "monitor" type speakers will be a good choice. I went with Harbeths (I also listen to everythin...
How do you listen?
Thanks @miljostyn, I never knew that, and now will slowly raise the volume. Warm my ears up, love it.
Tube vs solid state (with all apologies)
As a guitar player myself, you are basically asking should I use coated or uncoated strings…or a Marshall vs.Fender. Lots of opinions and reasons for either one. You will also get lots of opinions on this question. However, I will jump in and say ...
Bought a new McIntosh amp
Not going to get into the debate over the Mc sound, but I have owned Mc equipment and Rotel. I'd say upgrade the speakers first, based on my experience. Hope that is a little helpful.
