What separate tube phono stage do you use ?
I would think that 55db gain is way too high for most or all MM and MI cartridges. Usually it’s around 40db ? But maybe Ralph’s preamps can be customized to change the gain. The phono section has an unusually high overload margin so you can run a...
Does anyone care to ask an amplifier designer a technical question? My door is open.
Ralph, did you perhaps mis-read this. He said the idle goes down not up as the amp warms. This is the opposite of thermal runaway.Yes- you are correct- totally misread that one. It is pretty weird. I’m wondering how the thermal feedback is accompl...
Looking for a low heat tube amp
If heat is an issue, the Dynaco SCA-35 is a nice amp. It has well-designed output transformers and otherwise is a complete integrated amp with about 17 watts per channel. It should be renovated, as it is an older amp and should have its filter cap...
Buying an old Superphon
Be careful- from photos I've seen of the interior, a lot of it is held together with glue. Make sure it works correctly before shipment, and make sure that when its packed, its packed extremely well. If the preamp gets dropped too hard, it could w...
Whats the FATTEST sounding Tube amp to warm up Lean speakers?
I heard amazing things about your Amps and i am close to trying your s30.Usually people use the S-30 with the TSM. The VSM needs a bit more power so the M-60 has been the preferred amp for those.

I am puzzled why the idle current goes down rather than up as it warms. Usually its the other way round because of the negative temp coefficient of transistors.Actually this is pretty common with bipolars. They can get into a phenomena known as ...
Whats the FATTEST sounding Tube amp to warm up Lean speakers?
Sure- the Jouls is known to be a favorite match by the designer, however, im trying to counter the speaker's philosophy here, so it is my thought that the Jouls is actually going to emphasize the leanness of the speaker, not counter it. Or Bobb...

Roger, normally things go pretty easy on this forum unless certain individuals get involved as you've already sorted out. When they jump in, that's usually a signal that the usefulness of the thread is over.
RCA to XLR? Do I need to do this?
Since the preamp is single-ended, there won't be any benefit to using the XLR connection. If you ever get a balanced preamp, you may find that a whole world of resolution opens up for you :)
What separate tube phono stage do you use ?
It appears that pro tape machines were not quite designed to take the signal from phono. Well then I would have to use a transformer, what else can I do ?Pro audio tape machines tend to have lower impedance inputs, and often needing some voltage...
Any good reasons to use transistor phono stage and line level preamp instead of tube ?
@sbankNevertheless my statement is true.FWIW we've done a lot in the last 18 years or so since you had your MP-3 (yes- it really been that long!) to eliminate RFI susceptibility in our preamps. Tubes are actually less susceptible than solid state;...

You might also consider installing a vent in the ceiling, especially if you have a southern exposure.
Turning off tube preamp first sends solid state amp into protection?
The turn on/off order has nothing to do with tube vs. solid state. You turn on the pre-amp and sources before the power amp because the amp can’t send any of their on/off noise to the speakers until it is on. And you turn off the amp first for ...
Whats the FATTEST sounding Tube amp to warm up Lean speakers?
The most popular speaker for many years with our M-60 amplifier was the VSM. Very nice match and we showed with Merlin at several CE Shows. But I would not call the amplifier fat sounding (which usually describes an excess of 2nd harmonic distorti...

By the way, XLR ouput would be a plus because I am going to make recordings to reel to reel tape deck, and the good ones come only with XLR ins/outs.@innaIf you are going to drive your tape machine XLR inputs, you are going to need more guts! T...
