What separate tube phono stage do you use ? Unless I have the tape machine modified. How difficult is it ?@innaIt might not be that hard. I think the big problem to vercome is not input impedance, but the overall gain. But if the input impedance is dealt with, then no need for a transformer...
What is the purpose and function of a pre-amp in audio sound and production? In general, a preamp simply takes a small signal and makes it larger. In a guitar pedal, a preamp gives you more gain- easier to get some crunch.A preamp can be at any level, short of a power amplifier that actually drives the loudspeaker. All guit...
DAC plus Preamp or DAC-Preamp or DAC-Volume Control ? @david_ten FWIW its possible to set up an SET to accept and process balanced signals in the differential domain- so no need for an adapter. The mod can be done to any SET and is really quite simple!
Does anyone care to ask an amplifier designer a technical question? My door is open. Ralph, I measured your preamp's RIAA and it was +4 db in the bass. That is not accurate EQ. My RIAA accuracy is +/- 0.2 dB.. What interests me is how it came to be thought that preamps are harder. What designer is going around saying that? Im not....
Does anyone care to ask an amplifier designer a technical question? My door is open. The 6AS7 is a pass tube in a DC power supply. Heres a link, one has to scroll down a bit and read the application paragraph at the beginning. I dont think brand is going to make a lot of difference as they are all made for the same application ...
OTL Tube Amps and Full Range Electrostatic Speakers Power increases into lower impedances!@roberjermanOne thing about ESLs is their impedance curve is not also a map of its efficiency, like it is for most box speakers.Instead, its impedance curve is a result of being largely a capacitor. For this ...
Does anyone care to ask an amplifier designer a technical question? My door is open. Preamps are much easier and to me not so interestingRoger, IME this statement is false. Many good amplifier designers think that a good preamp is no big deal and then go right ahead and design a poor preamp as a result. This is totally because the...
What separate tube phono stage do you use ? Who else makes tube preamps with excellent phono that could compete with Ralph's design ?@inna The problem you have is driving the input of the tape machine. If you are going to use a stand-alone phono section, it will undoubtedly have to use a ma...
Please help! Tube amp issue The feedback loop using R9 and R23 may be positive (instead of negative) because you may have miss-wired the two input connectors!roberjerman and salectricgot it. This is how an amplifier like this behaves when the output transformer is incorre...
Whats the FATTEST sounding Tube amp to warm up Lean speakers? I agree on #4, no power conditioners. They cannot fix a difficiency in an amplifier's design. The resistance of the series chokes adds to the resistances in the primary circuit. They add yet another power cord and socket, more resistance. Here w...
Joule - Electra: Just How Hot?? The short answer is yes, there is a solution. The longer answer is you are going to have to send them to someone that knows the equipment well enough in order to engineer a proper solution.FWIW we have sorted out several JA products so far. Otherwi...
What will a preamp do for me? But, according to Paul, todays controls are extremely linear. He also explained how even the best non-linear controls increase noise levels at lower volumes, and can not compete with today's digital controls.I can safely challenge the idea that...
Does anyone care to ask an amplifier designer a technical question? My door is open. All OTL amps like high impedance because they have lots of voltage but limited current. Since current is the limit use the forumla Power = current squared x impedance. The amplifier max current is the same for both speakers but 16 ohms gives y...
Does anyone care to ask an amplifier designer a technical question? My door is open. I'm still in the Polypropylene camp. Best thing for the money. Remember any part I buy is 5 x cost to the final buyer. So I cant buy too many $50 caps expensive resistors. For a long time polystyrene was an alternative that performed better and w...
Why do amps sound different? @roberjerman,The first 5 watts or so it what most amps don't get right. With many push-pull amps, the distortion below 5 watts is rising as power is decreased! Not all amps do this though- a lot depends on the topology of the amplifier. |
