RIAA, Questions only please
@solypsa mentioned cartridge design. I would like to learn more about the design of a strain gauge cartridge as it seems to me eliminating the EQ is a good thing.A strain gauge usually employs a power supply which puts a bit of voltage across a ...
RIAA, Questions only please
Actually it wasn’t Roger who asserted that. I stated that based on what was said in the following writeup:@almarg@ramtubesThanks Al for that correction. My apologies Roger on this mistake.
RIAA, Questions only please
A question: are you going to apologize for mis-characterizing our preamps in public? The statement below does not make sense. Could you clarify? The answer to the question concerning noise reduction is that the simple filter that RIAA decided upon ...
Step down transformers detrimental to SQ?
You can get a bucking transformer for less than $50.00 that would do the job with many amplifiers. You might have to spend $100 for a really big amp.
tube pre amp or tube amp
Bass is the one thing that makes me hesitant about tube amps. I do use subwoofers, so I guess I really should not have a concern because I can always adjust it to make up for what I feel is missing on the low end.The amp I play has full power ba...
Tubes vs SS preamp question....
I like tubes, but can one have too much of a good thing in a system??? The simple answer is no and the complex answer will start with 'no'  :)A good thing in a system is a good thing and the more the better.
Why do some manufacturers reverse preamp polarity in the first place?
Over the years I find bass is the greatest offender. I hear it more in the brass instruments.
Step down transformers detrimental to SQ?
Its also possible to step down the AC voltage by doing an old DIYer trick which is to buck the AC line voltage. This is done with a smaller transformer that has a secondary rated for the current you need (50% more than the fuse rating is good) and...
Why do some manufacturers reverse preamp polarity in the first place?
We've had a polarity switch on our preamps since their inception. Changing speaker cables around is a real pain!
Question on tube placement...
IME its best to put the best tubes as early in the signal chain as possible. Of course this asks the question 'which tube is best?' and if you are messing with NOS tubes that can be tricky to answer- some tubes work better in certain situations th...
Why do some manufacturers reverse preamp polarity in the first place?
Its rare that the absolute polarity is audible- you need a purist recording that is done with only two mics. 50% of all recordings are in reverse polarity to begin with, since the recording industry does not pay any attention to this issue.
The Science of Vinyl/Analog Setups
Where was I? Oh yeah, man-made. There is one thing man has made that breaks this rule. And its not tubes, wire, speaker cones or cabinets, and it certainly isn't records. Its CDs. And yes, digital distortion levels are lower. Absolutely. But we...
a dilemma for cartridge/phono stage combination
in several places i read that low output mc are generally better in sound then high output .Low output cartridges generally have more bandwidth.tried to find out prices of Jensen sut’s.do you mean one of those?https://www.cs1.net/products/jensen_t...
tube pre amp or tube amp
SS power does develop better bass than will tubes. This is not universal! That depends a lot on the relationship that the speaker has with the amplifier. If the speaker is easy for the amp to drive, a tube amp may well make better bass. An example ...
a dilemma for cartridge/phono stage combination
If you like your phono preamp rather than replace it I would get a Step Up Transformer (SUT) **if** you decide on a low output cartridge. The SUT will have to be properly loaded (which is usually a resistor-capacitor combination) depending on the ...
