Tube / SS amp that handles 4ohm loads well and delivers lively texture / palpability I've never heard 'tight bass' in real life. I play string bass, played in orchestras, jazz and folk combos and play in a rock band (keyboards) right now. IME/IMO 'tight bass' is a thing that only exists in stereo, and then mostly when the woofers ...
best preamps So there you have it. All preamps are the Best.
Best Preamp New or Used up to $3,000 ?? With your 10kohm input impedance on the DNA500 it need 2.2v for full output, very hard to get a tube or passive to work with this. @dsper FWIW I know of a couple of tube preamps that have no problem with this sort of load whatsoever.
Tonearms: Ripoff? I doubt my system could resolve the subtle details that a great arm such as a Triplanar or Graham, Fidelity Research, Reed, Moerch could and so on.One thing the Triplanar gets right is the bass, which so many other arms do not. You don't have to...
Reel to reel deck directly to power amp ? Yes, I was thinking about output/input match, but Ralph didn't mention there might be a problem. With any pro audio or semi-pro reel to reel, you have a volume control to control output. On my Otari 8-channel, not so easily accessed as you have to...
Best Preamp New or Used up to $3,000 ?? Because an "active preamp" cannot increase the dynamic range any more than what source is giving, unless it has an inbuilt "dynamic range enhancer" (DBX and they sound s**t). It can only serve to reduce the dynamic range, because it's not "a p...
Tube phono stage, or solid state, pre amp 2. PS Audio GHPG phono stage, loading jumps from 100- to 400 ohms, and the Zu likes around 300ohms??, Ive tried 100ohms, but seem's a bit muted and boring, when I go to 400ohms, the bass comes alive, but with harshness,!!The loading is there fo...
Tonearms: Ripoff? What defines high end? Is it simply a price point or something more complex?Intention, more than anything else. It certainly isn't price.
Reel to reel deck directly to power amp ? How do you plan to get the proper phono equalization- an outboard phono section? If so, and you plan to run it through the line section of the deck (probably in record mode) then the line section of the deck will work fine.
Tube / SS amp that handles 4ohm loads well and delivers lively texture / palpability If you run a set of ZEROs (www.zeroimpedance.com) then you can run any tube amp you want that makes the needed power. Here are some comments regarding the ZEROs, with a tube amp that isn't otherwise comfortable on four ohms:http://www.enjoythemusic...
Best Preamp New or Used up to $3,000 ?? As the fabled "perfect" preamp "sound like a piece of wire" adding or detracting nothing which is what your doing now by going direct. The problem with a straight wire is that many sources don't really provide an adequate means of controlling the ...
Best Preamp New or Used up to $3,000 ?? @twoleftearsIts a bit hard to sort out from their website how their preamps work, but it appears that the balanced connections use transformers both for input and output. If that is the case, then it might support the standard. This is because a tr...
Time for a Pre change? Need the wisdom... Brightness can also be caused by higher ordered harmonics in very small amounts. This is why transistor equipment tends to sound brighter and harsher than tubes. But Erik's suggestions above are good- if your room has too many reflections due to b...
Need Preamp and Amp to Match Vandersteen 3A Signature Speakers We used a set of Vandersteen 3As in our room at CES many years ago; Richard Vandersteen commented that our room sounded considerably better than his. We were using our M-60 amplifiers, which are tube amps. So I can safely say that the speakers are...
