Amp recommendations for stacked Quad ESL 57's
A customer of ours, David Magnan (of Magnan cables), ran stacked ESL57s for many years wired in series and using a set of our M-60s.
Why do some manufacturers reverse preamp polarity in the first place?
But 50-50 assumes no audio engineers or mastering engineers check for Polarity and I don’t buy it. I’m not saying it’s impossible, just the probability is low.Recording engineers in fact do not check for polarity. For the most part they regard ...
Amplifier design parameters required for a good match for high (16+) ohm speakers?
The Model One should be very nice with the ST-70. They rate the sensitivity at 92 dB if memory serves; if that is actually sensitivity, the speaker is 95dB 1 watt/1 meter, which will mean the ST-70 has adequate power. If the amp has not been used ...
Amplifier design parameters required for a good match for high (16+) ohm speakers?
Ralph, I am using the 16ohm output with the Contrasts, which are rated at 16ohms. I am not sure about actual impedance within the bass frequencies. Which model?
Amplifier design parameters required for a good match for high (16+) ohm speakers?
Ralph said it was in the best condition of amy he has seen for that time. It was factory manufactured, not put together as a kit. I own a original owners/instruction manual for the kit version so following it, I could likely replace the power s...
Tight bass sub recommendations
Tight bass can be created by a bass player damping every note, and utilizing over-damped drums. Listen to this sort of thing outside with no acoustic boundaries and there ya go!I've been playing bass since 6th grade. True- it gets a lot more per...
Amplifier design parameters required for a good match for high (16+) ohm speakers?
I guess then, when considering an amplifiers rating into an 8ohm load, one should half that rating into a 16ohm load as a way of assessing that amplifiers ability to provide enough power for a particular circumstance.  I always found that the S...
How often do you have to service your Studer or Otari deck ? Home not pro environment.
Do Studers actually record and sound better than Otari 5050 ?IME, Yes.
One Amp To ‘Rule’ Them All....
There must be amplifiers in the world that work well with almost any speaker and are consistent competent performers that are also reasonably affordable. There aren't.Generally speaking, transistor amps have a hard time sounding right on ESLs be...
How often do you have to service your Studer or Otari deck ? Home not pro environment.
@innaI have a Revox B-77 in a travel case that's looking for a home. It needs transport service (motors cleaned and lubricated) and worked last I plugged it in a few years ago. If you can find someone to service it out for you, its free for the sh...
RIAA, Questions only please
What the article leaves me uncertain about, however, given that in modern times a cutting head is to at least a loose approximation a velocity-based transducer (meaning that it converts signal amplitude to groove velocity), is **how** the cutte...
Tight bass sub recommendations
I’m just looking for a deep Tight bass. Thoughts???'Tight bass' is a thing that does not seem to exist in nature. Its an artifact of over-damped speakers in a hifi setup.
One Amp To ‘Rule’ Them All....
I wish to define for the whole audio community one or more common, competant, reliable, well executed, sonically comprehensive, reasonably affordable amplifiers that we can begin to use as ‘reference amplifiers’ to judge other amplifiers by. That’...
What class of amplifier has the most high definition sound ?
Just so we are clear- there are classes of amplificationandthere are types of amplifiers. The class of operation has mostly to do with how the output devices in the amp are turned on and how long they are on. In this regard both solid state and tub...
Help - I've Got the Dreaded Transformer Growl....
DC on the line is not expensive to fix and you don't need a conditioner for it- just a DC Blocker. That is likely the number one reason for transformers (in particular toroidal transformers) getting mechanically noisy.
