searching balanced Tube preamp with.......
Wow - that LS36.5 looks really nice for the money. Very impressive circuit design. It is interesting that they use output transformers (in a preamp) to get low output impedance - I think that is what Lamm does too but I am not sure about the McInt...
searching balanced Tube preamp with.......
That is very low for a tube amp but the Lamm L2 Reference is 130 Ohms. The McIntosh C1000T is about 220 Ohms. Both are about $17,000.Arthur
McIntosh Integrated
Sure, tubes rule!! I have had all manner of SS amps and none of them compare to my McIntosh MC240.Arthur
Vintage vs. new McIntosh amps long
I see my reputation precedes me. :) Glad you are happy with your new amp! The MC402 is pretty much the best solid-state amp I have ever heard. No matter the speakers, the sound is always seductive and incredibly "right." Relax, have an EKU 28 and ...
Interconnect and Speaker Cable Burn In
Yes indeed, you need a load connected and music playing. For the life of me, I cannot understand this break-in thing. Not because I am a EE and should refute such "nonsense" but because I am an objectivist who has experienced break-in several times...
Biamping with tubes and SS: Input sensitivity key?
Bob - adjusting the amps by ear is the same as EQ.Springbok - Matching the gain doesn't help if the output power levels are different. There are three unknowns, so two knowns are necessary to figure it out: gain and output power, or, gain and inpu...
Biamping with tubes and SS: Input sensitivity key?
Well, I'll tell you what. You can measure all you want to but that isn't the right way to do this. I do exactly what you seek and have messed with several combinations and have tried every way myself. This is assuming you are still going to try so...
Biamping with tubes and SS: Input sensitivity key?
The best way is to compare input sensitivity at the same output level. You can usually calculate all the relevant data from the little bit that is given in the specs.Arthur
What CD Player can top this
I had a CAL Icon mk2 with no mods for a while. I didn't care for its soft presentation and lack of transparency. My Audio Aero Prima mk2 was significantly better in all aspects IMO and I absolutely recommend you give one a try.Arthur
Biamping with tubes and SS: Input sensitivity key?
With volume control on the TAD, there should be no problem in matching the amps. Put the SS amp on the bass and the tube amp on the highs, adjust the volume for a balanced sound (use familiar music to do this) and voila, you should be done.Check o...
step up for mc
Ok, three things.1. I am talking about high quality transformers.2. High quality transformers only act as filters at very very low frequencies, like <5Hz, which is a positive thing in stereos, and at very high frequencies which isn't a problem ...
turntable sounds better on warm summer nights
Did you see the other thread about getting a humidifier to improve sound quality?Arthur
I don't understand a problem with my amp.
Sounds like a bias problem to me. Heat can make the bias drift if the feedback loop (or the component tolerances if zero feedback) isn't quite right. If it drifts enough, you get a distorted signal for sure. I think it is a big problem that should...
DIY Rack
Hi PeterCheck out the pics on my system page. I made that rack myself from parts I found at Lowe's. I used glued boards instead of hardwood for its better vibration control, stained them black, and mounted them with plumbing parts. Believe it or n...
step up for mc
As an EE, my opinion is that transformers are the most logical choice. They convert impedance and voltage inherently which makes them perfectly suited for step up of small voltages. Transistors can do it too but aren't nearly as elegant a solution...
