Your vote for greatest (covers) album

Mine is Annie Lennox "Nostalgia". Not only is she one of the greatest female voices ever, she knows how to make a song her own.

If you like Soul Deep, Barnsey cut Soul Deeper 9 years later.
And there's Soul Searchin'  from 2016 - his 16th studio album.

Good one, @mapman. How could I have forgotten THAT one?! Rosanne's Pa recorded a lot of Dylan, but not enough to fill an album, I don't believe. He was the first major artist to express his admiration for Bob and his songs. Takes one to know one. ;-)
David Bowie is an album entirely of "cover" songs.  That alone makes it one of the best, if not THE best, for "covers".
My two cents on the matter.

And for those thinking of album cover art, definitely Yes albums and anything from Roger Dean.  Although S. Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band is certainly a stand-out classic of album art unto itself.
Individual artist:
Matthew Sweet & Susanna Hoffs - "Under The Covers, Volumes 1 - 3."

Compilations:
"Heaven & Hell, Volume 1": A Tribute To The Velvet Underground

"Starman:: UNCUT Magazine's rare and exclusive versions of 18 David Bowie songs.

"Spirit of 73";  Good overall; but, the Rosanne Cash cover of "River" is much better than the original by Joni Mitchell. I did not think it was possible for anyone to outdo Joni on one of her own songs..
cassandra wilson adding lots of slink and sorrow to U2’s “love is blindness” and Van Morrison’s “Tupelo Honey”
Don’t know about the best album, but you just HAVE to watch Denzel Curry’s “Like a Version’ take of Rage Against The Machine’s ‘Bulls on Parade’ on Youtube.

Live, one take; just shows what happens when all the celestial objects are in alignment and you add a sprinkle of pixie dust.
One assumes Dylan’s covers of Sinatra has been mentioned. 😩

And Bryan Ferry’s covers of Dylan. 😱
Can't believe nobody has mentioned Linda Ronstadt. All her albums would be nominees in both categories since she didn't write music and was hot.
Allison Krauss -- Forget About It
Big Band of Brothers -- Big band Allman covers, you need this disc

Great Ceaser's Ghost -- What's Done is Done --  Allmans and the Dead
Shelby Lynne -- Just a Little Lovin' -- Dusty Springfield tunes
Moody Bluegrass, Vol I and II -- just what you think it is
James Lee Stanley -- All Wood and Doors -- Doors tunes
And finally, a series....The Waybacks and Friends, who every year records a live concert consisting of playing a well known album from start to finish....including Led Zeppelin II, Abbey Road, Eat a Peach, After the Flood, Deja Vu, and some others...
Gladys Knight ..”I heard it Through the Grapevine” covered by Marvin Gaye and  Creedence Clearwater Revival
Dylan.. “All Along the Watchtower”. Covered by Jimi Hendrix
Doors “Light My Fire” covered by Jose Feliciano
Impressions “People Get Ready” covered by Chambers Brothers
Al Hibbler “ Unchained Melody”. covered by Bobby Hatfield of the Righteous BrothersBroadway “ My Favorite Things” covered by John Coltrane
Herbie Hancock “Maiden Voyage” covered by Ramsey Lewis

Ted Daffans Texans “Born to Lose” Covered by Ray Charles
Audrey Hepburn “Moon River” covered by Jerry Butler
Brook Benton “Walk on the Wild Side” covered by Jimmy Smith

Todd Rundgren - Faithful.   Spot of re-creations of the Yardbirds'

"Strawberry Fields Forever", Dylan's "Most Likely You Go Your Way And I'll Go Mine"
and Hendrix's "If Six Was Nine
Try Eva Cassidy "The Best of Eva Cassidy" 2 record set of all or almost all covered songs is the best for me. Her voice is angelic and spot on pitch wise.... almost chilling. Just beautiful. Hopefully you won't be disappointed.
second Rosanne’s The List....you inspired me to start my morning with her :)

Its a mix of originals and covers, but overall one of my favorite albums, Nirvana - MTV Unplugged

Ryan Adams - 1989

I love the man in black’s American series. Johnny’s cover of Hurt on American IV is pretty special
Abba-esque EP by Erasure really jumps first in my mind. Covering 4 ABBA songs and making it completely theirs.
The Scissor Sisters glam, disco cover of Pink Floyd’s “Comfortably Numb” is so wrong...but yet so right
I don't know of any album sloppier than Sid Sings, but I, too, have enjoyed it a lot.
Yes, the Motorhead covers album is good, and I also liked Guns N' Roses' Spaghetti Incident and Metallica's Garage Days Revisited; both had a couple low points, but the highlights more than made up for it.In that same era, Slayer put out the note-worthy Undisputed Attitude, which had its moments and was mind-blowingly fast, even for Slayer.
My all-time favorite cover album, though, has to go to The Walkabouts' Satisfied Mind.  It is a phenomenal album by any measure.
Bryan Ferry's These Foolish Things (1973). Covers of the Beatles, Stones, Dylan ... I have the CD on order!
+1 mammothguy54! Bowie's Pinups is great! I forgot about it! Thanks for the reminder!
Once a week I listen to the version from Nina Hagen and Apocalyptica of Rammsteins "Seemann" - it is amazing.
1-Jethro Tull “Thick as a brick” not just for the music talents but also one of the best produced albums ever.
2- Doors “ LA Women”
3- Pink Floyd. “The Wall”
4- AC/DC “Power Age”
Zappa's "Overnight Sensation" is a fascinating cover... Oh, you meant cover SONGS.
Uh, it’s supposed to be album “covers” not ...oh, never mind! 🤗
Creedence covering, "I Heard it Through the Grapevine"
The Animals covering Bob Dylan's cover of Dave Van Ronk's arrangement of "House of the Rising Sun"
Again for Jimi covering, "All Along the Watchtower"
Maybe CSNY covering Joni Mitchell's "Woodstock"
And - my personal favorite - Stones covering, "Love in Vain" (original by Robert Johnson)
But, I'm dating myself with these choices...

These are the latest cover music on my radar.

Walter Trout does a great obscure blues cover album called "Survivor Blues" and Neal Morse and his band latest called Cov3r to Cov3r.

My favorite albums covers are Molly Hatchets self titled LP with the Frazetta's Death Dealer artwork and Nazareth Hair of the Dog LP.
" One assumes Dylan’s covers of Sinatra has been mentioned. 😩"
There is a reason why it does not collect votes.

I'm amazed by how many don't know the difference between cover albums and album covers.
It’s possible there’s something terribly wrong with the school system. 😩
Wow!

OK, London Calling = Elvis' first album cover

Ramons Acid = Greatfull Dead = Big Brother + Janis

Faithful = White Album

Many others show the artist(s) standing or sitting down.

Not sure what the "artistic" elements of that are, but to each his own.

I guess derivative covers are good, or are they "tributes" like London Calling?

Cheers!
