Tommy Bolin, Teaser I think the whole albumn is solid. Phil Collins shows up on percussion, Jeff Porcaro, Jan Hammer are on a couple tracks. Now the CD isn't recorded very well. Well this week I've kind of run the gamut: Randy Newman - Faust, Good Old Boys Gentle Giant - Gentle Giant Epica - The Classical Conspiracy Strawbs - Ghosts Within Temptation - An Acoustic Night at the Theater, Hydra, Black Symphony Captain Beyond - Sufficiently Breathless Nox Arcana - Theater of Illusion, Carnival of Lost Souls Warren Zevon - I'll sleep when I'm dead, Genius: The best of Warren Zevon Kansas - Masque Just kind of a jumping around week. After reading this thread, I'll have to go back and revisit some Procol Harum (although seldom far from my playlist), Cricklewood Green, Rockin' the Fillmore, So What (got them all night laundromat blues...), and I'll have to check out some of the names I haven't heard (or don't remember...) that have been mentioned. @uberwalz - Definitely, I already listen to, and love, Lacuna Coil - just not this week. Along with Eyes of Eden, Delain, Apocalyptica, Edenbridge, Tarja, Nightwish, Urn, Octavia Sperati, Theater of Tragedy, Eternal Tears of Sorrow...well you get the idea :-) Mostly Autumn I'm not familiar with, but I'll check them out for sure. Strawbs were really great, but they had some duds as well (Afraid I don't share your love of Bursting at The Seams - Now, Grave New World, From The Witchwood, Hero and Heroine, *that's* what I'm talking about!). Not really a real fan of Sandy Denny's solo stuff, but... If you haven't listened to Steeley Span you should give them a try. "Portfolio" is a very good collection to start with. @nutty - I'll have to check out Lucifers Friend and Mind Exploding. New ones to me. I'm also a big fan of Atomic Rooster, Audience, Renaissance, Genesis (think From Genesis Through Revelation through And Then There Were Three...), Steeleye Span, Illusion, King Crimson (Lark's Tongues in Aspic, and Starless and Bible Black are favorites) and I love Dream Theater - all of their albums. After Masque I think Kansas just kind of went downhill, but the earlier stuff was great! Just like with early Rush (Caress of Steel is really hard to beat), Tull (Aqualung and earlier). So much good stuff from the 'good old days'. And I listen to some esoteric stuff as well ;-) KH |
keithahughes, Dream Theater, I used to listen a lot of DT. I have most of Dream Theater's media on CD. I’ve attended four of their shows, one with Spocks Beard as the opener. I have an "original unopened" copy of Live Scenes from New York. 3 disc set. The cover shows the Twin Towers and Statue of Liberty engulfed in flames.... From Wiki"..Coincidentally, it was originally released on September 11, 2001, and when it was noticed that the cover artwork depicted the skyline of New York, including the twin towers of the World Trade Center, in flames, it was recalled and re-released a short time later with the Majesty symbol instead.[3] Some copies with the original artwork still exist, and are now rare collector’s items.." Jafant, uberwaltz, I saw Van Halen with DLR in Cincinnati on the 1984 Tour. Not bad as I recall. But I agree, with Sammy they were on another level. Also it's been a while since I've listened to Balance. I recall the disc being a tad bright. Now I have different speakers, I'll give it a quick spin. falconquest, Good to see Masque getting another nod. Kansas is/was a great band. Song For America's- "Lonely Street" has got some grit! N |
uberwaltz I can relate to your DLR experience - I went to see Dream Theater about 3 years ago, in a great venue with exceptional acoustics. We had just seen Bonnie Raitt there and she was glorious as usual. We actually walked out of the DT concert - it was so loud, so incredibly distorted, it was unlistenable. Vocals were just *barely* audible, and completely indiscernable. Really disappointing. I don't know why they felt the need to mix it like that. Atomic Rooster "In Hearing Of" spinning now, following Uriah Heep's "Demons and Wizards". BTW - I checked out some Mostly Autumn; Very nice! Thanks for the info, I'll have to get some of their albums, any suggestions of top picks? |
