Fantastic SQ and great music by Byrne/Eno. Mastered by G.Calbi@Sterling.
Ahhh….so you don’t have the standard jumpers that seem to be indicated? Yes, it does look confusing, but if I understand, installing jumpers at #2&4 on the MM slots would give 200pf capacitance, and a jumper in the #5 slot of the MC slots would give 980 ohm resistance. At least I believe that is what I am seeing. |
Steve, it seems like if you have the standard jumpers, you have many combinations to try. You really cannot hurt anything by experimenting 🙂 Not sure you really need to use the custom slot/jumpers. Might have worked for the previous owner, but may not be necessary for you. Perhaps a custom resistance jumper to attain 400 ohm? That is not offered via the standard jumpers. Again, Peter states a min. 470 resistance for the Sussarro. Just guessing here. Also may be worth calling Soundsmith to ask what capacitance would work best with the Sussarro, as they don’t give that info (N/A). |
Three I just bought today: Sarah Vaughan - The Greatness Of Url: https://www.discogs.com/release/23429120-Sarah-Vaughan-The-Greatness-Of Wings (2) - At The Speed Of Sound Url: https://www.discogs.com/release/5679668-Wings-At-The-Speed-Of-Sound The Dave Brubeck Quartet - The Riddle Url: https://www.discogs.com/release/9035109-The-Dave-Brubeck-Quartet-The-Riddle |
Sinatra -- Strangers in the Night. The title cut is compressed, cut in mono, and pretty obviously the same mix as the hit single. The rest of the cuts are in luscious stereo, with Nelson Riddle and the Orchestra providing sterling back-up.
Le Orme -- Uomo di Pezza. I bought it when I was on a kick for Italian Progressive Rock. Great surrealist album cover. Music is second rate Emerson Lake & Palmer.. I'll be generous and rate the SQ as maybe a 7 out of 10. |

@slaw @bkeske Agree w/Brian that trying the various loading resistance options can't hurt any more than turning a tone control would. I'm pretty sure that capacitance settings only affect MM; that's why Soundsmith doesn't have a recommendation for it regarding their MIMC & MCs. Most MM phono stages have only one fixed value that is so common that almost all MM carts are built with it in mind. OTOH, I've seen old threads encouraging tweaking capacitance on certain models if you have that flexibility. So Steve, you have that flexibility if you ever experiment w/MM. |
Thanks Spencer, as I have never had a phono pre with capacitance setting options, I did not know it was only used for MM. The MIMC and Sussarro are still MI (moving iron), but as they are both lo output, I believe work more as a MC carts vs MM. If Steve is using the custom 400 jumper at the MC resistance slots, that may be a tad low per Peter’s recommendations. Again, I prefer my MIMC at 1K, and have read other lo output SS (MIMC, Sussarro, Voice, etc) users prefer the same. But as I said, if I had the option of 800-850, I have a feeling that may be perfect.

@vair68robert FYI, I was able to see the LA Philharmonic, conducted by Zubin Mehta, perform the 1812 Overture at the Hollywood Bowl. The concert was titled as "The Tchaikovsky Spectacular". That was a long time ago, about 1980, but I remember it to this day. The canons did produce a good wallup. The fireworks were set off from behind the Bowl. Really a spectacular show and wonderful experience. |
Hey Brian, I sent a PM. I was reading through my manual'. MC loading is resistive. MM options are said to be capacitive. I think this is the standard. The loading "dock" area in back allows for two inputs with a r/l channel for each input. You can do 2 MC carts, two MM carts or one of each. The front panel button switches between input one and two .

@mammothguy54 I happy to hear the music brings back enjoyable memories to you also. In Chicago the fireworks were over the lake a great black background , I enjoyed them from the late 60's thru the late 80's . @bkeske You forgot sitting on a blanket holding your viewing spot for hours while drinking with friends. That's why I took the L train or rode my bicycle . |
