Whats on your turntable tonight?

For me its the first or very early LP's of:
Allman Brothers - "Allman Joys" "Idyllwild South"
Santana - "Santana" 200 g reissue
Emerson Lake and Palmer - "Emerson Lake and Palmer"
and,
Beethoven - "Piano Concerto No. 4 in G Major" Rudolph Serkin/Ozawa/BSO
slipknot1

The Claypool Lennon Delerium, "Lime and Limpid Green". @ Bsion, "Whale Meat Again" is just a fantastic spin. I dig it every time it goes on.

Rush • Moving Pictures • 40th Anniversary • 2022 • Anthem

More clarity and air than other issues including the OP and the other DMM from a few years back. It’s still dry and a little dark, as it always was. This vinyl is not super quiet - no ticks or pops but the overall noise, like tape hiss, is apparent, which is not the case on my earlier version.

I’ve been discussing the 40th with my brother who’s a Rush enthusiast.  He thinks the 40th is the same master as the 2015 DMM.   This sounds better to me though even though the vinyl isn’t as quiet.   Further exploration required.

@bkeske Hi Brian. Afraid not. Amperex 7316 are meant to be top 12AU7. CBS-Hytron have a great reputation. To be honest, you can’t go wrong with black plates. I had an amp that called for 12AU7/ECC82 and I swapped in a long black plate Brimar CV5042. It draws more heater current but man, it had such a "black" background and air, I was blown away. Are your Brimars (British Manufactured American Radio) black plates?

Orff, Sylvia Greenberg, James Bowman, Stephen Roberts, RSO Berlin, Choir – Carmina Burana (London 1984) side 1

Digital and sounds it. I never noticed when buying it.

Edit: It’s not too bad now that it’s got more fortissimo. Clean recording. Just some pinched graininess in the upper mids on massed voice.

Edit: This is great. On to side 2.

@noromance

My Brimar’s are NOS CV4003 originally from Upscale. And no, not black plate. Yea, the Amperex are said to be quite good, but obviously much more $$$.

As I say, these were pretty inexpensive, (only $58 for 2 shipped), so can hardly go wrong to experiment a little. Many have said they are quite good….we’ll see.

Ah, CV4003. I had those and another version, Mullard M8136. Both box plates. Not a fan when I had them in my Croft phono back in the 80s. Too creamy sounding for me. If yours sound like that, the new ones en route should be interesting!

@noromance

Thanks Brian. Just checked, they will arrive tomorrow. Looking forward to checking them out. I love the Tele/Dynaco smooth plate AX7’s, so will be interesting to compare these ‘au7’s’ with them, and see which works better together.

The Incredible String Band – Changing Horses (Elektra 1969)

Worth it for Creation alone.

“Ask anyone”, he muttered, as he spat a small Brilliant blue insect, whirring into the gauze / I would advise stilts for the quagmires / And camels for the snowy hills and any survivors / Their debts I will certainly pay"

Herbie Flowers – Plant Life (Philips 1975)

An old weird favorite.

@spiritofradio  - OK, regarding the RUSH - "Permanent Waves 40th Anniversary Edition" vs. OP; I listened to side one of both. I think the vocals have a little less hiss on the 40th. The guitar solos also seem to be a little more distinct, not as much fuzz on the 40th. The vinyl on the 40th is a little more noisy. Overall, they are pretty close, but for some reason the OP moves me a little more. I would be happy with either. I haven't played the extra live LP's from the 40th set yet.

If it came down to spending $69 for the 40th 3-LP set, vs. $10 -$15 for a great OP copy, I would choose the OP. But I'm happy to have both...

Emmylou Harris' Luxury Liner.

Poncho and Lefty on Maggies with great Audio Research tube gear fills the room with beautiful music.

Maria Muldar's Midnight at the Oasis is another wonderful album for my system and room.

This is why I keep telling people to audition Maggies IN THEIR ROOM.  Once you hear them (set up properly), with good hardware, it is hard to believe you listened to any boxes.  As a matter of fact, put them side-by-side and see what YOU think.  That is the ultimate way to choose.  Most of all, happy listening!

Cheers!

i love that bram tchiakovsky record--it has that inimitable quality of sounding like it was written and recorded in about 30 minutes. his third record."funland" is also really underrated.

@bslon  - +1 - Budgie / Bandolier

Bill, Love that record! One of my older sisters was a rocker and brought the 8-Track home. I used to listen to it on our console stereo...

Picked up the vinyl when around 1978/9 when I was in college. Still in semi-regular rotation...

@loomisjohnson I agree with you on Bram T., he was also in The Motors. Which reminded me to play his record, I hadn’t in a while.

@reubent Me too Tom, awesome about the 8 track! I like the LP and had to post the cover art, some of the best imo. It gives me a grin!

@noromance

Well, the CBS-Hytron 5814A‘s arrived, and was anxious to compare them to the Brimar’s. Wow, I think I like these a lot. More detailed and ‘clear’. Because of that, the dynamics seem as good if not better. Listening to some complex orchestration, the instruments seem better defined, and even the overall tone a bit better. Went back and forth twice, and I think I’ll keep these in over the Brimar’s for a while, possibly for good.

To me, a fairly unknown tube manufacturer that performs very well and sounds great. Glad I took a shot with them.

@slaw

Not that I noticed Steve. To be honest I’m not sure spec-wise what their gain is vs the 12au7’s, but know from reading, many have used them in place of au’s, and seemingly ‘equivalent’.

Very enjoyable, highly recommended!

+1 @slaw   Picked up Dave Mason "Alone Together Again" about 3-4 years ago at a garage sale not knowing the album but having respect for Dave Mason as a musician. This recording gets better after every listen. Might be a Top 100 1970's pop/rock recording regardless of the "experts" opinion.

Hey @dayglow ,

"Again" just came out recently. It’s Dave’s reworking of his classic album

Great album!
