The Royal Scam
Received a couple of very thoughtful gift LPs for Christmas. David Gray - "Mutineers" John Prine - "Fair and Square" Saw both artists live, with my wife, when they were promoting these 2 releases. Both were fantastics shows. Won’t be able to listen until we return home from visiting the In-Laws in Clemson, SC. I’ll have something to look forward to when I return... |
Merry Christmas! In the spirit of the moment, it seems the right time to spin the Ze Records “A Christmas Record” with various artists on the label from 1981 on white vinyl. One notable track is “Christmas Wrapping” by The Waitresses. On the 40th anniversary of this record, Chris Butler recounted the grief the band went through writing and recording the track. What surprised him even more was “Christmas Wrapping” would become their defining song rather than “I Know What Boys Like”. @sbank - Thanks for the kudos from "Mrs. Bent" Tina. BTW, Reubent is actually Reuben T. (Thomas) Turner. That make her..... Tina Turner! She's a lucky woman! |
Sorry for boring everyone with my last post. Too much coffee! @bslon Bill, so as the reigning Cars expert, which album should be my third, having just their first two? |
@sbank Spencer, I'm not Bill, but you have to get Heartbeat City. It's a sonic masterpiece and a great collection of catchy pop songs. I think it's their masterpiece, but the debut album was pretty amazing also. A tip... when I find myself wanting to explore a new artist, or expand what I've heard from someone I like, I will visit allmusic.com and look at the artist's discography. Most albums have reviews and also user reviews and ratings. I don't always agree with them, but for the most part it's a good guide. I hate their website, especially on mobile, but there's great content. |
@big_greg Thanks, Greg. I’ll look for Heartbeat City. Yeah, I've used allmusic. Not bad, but the crew here is better ;-) Glad you’re Greg! |
This Cars fan would rank them (on LP) The Cars, Candy-O, Shake It Up, Heartbeat City, Door To Door, Panorama. On CD I’ve got a couple Hits disks and Move Like This—if I had MLT on vinyl it’d be in the top 3. @nicks25 mentioned Elliot Easton’s guitar work, Greg Hawkes’ keyboards are especially good on Shake It Up. Great band, sorry we’re down a couple of members. RIP Rick, Benjamin. |
Thanks @bslon Noted to Shake It Up! Nick Cave And The Bad Seeds – Murder Ballads Sufjan Stevens – Greetings From Michigan The Great Lake State |
LOL Spencer! I also had their music videos on Beta Hi-Fi back in the day, I’m a fan and a dinosaur! Reminds me to get the blu-ray. |
