Whats on your turntable tonight?

For me its the first or very early LP's of:
Allman Brothers - "Allman Joys" "Idyllwild South"
Santana - "Santana" 200 g reissue
Emerson Lake and Palmer - "Emerson Lake and Palmer"
and,
Beethoven - "Piano Concerto No. 4 in G Major" Rudolph Serkin/Ozawa/BSO
slipknot1

@noromance

12” vs. 9” too…?

@spiritofradio I know there are differences but I move things around a bit and am used to the differences. The cartridge difference surpasses the arm length and the phono stage. Thanks.

Brian (noromance),

I am a fan of MM cartridges. At some point I'm going to have to try a Decca cartridge (of some flavor), as they consistently receive praise from music lovers. Glad you're happy with the "Super Gold".

The Stone Roses - "Second Coming"

Really looking forward to this one. Love the opening track...

Al Stewart / Past, Present and Future
1973 Chess/Janus Records

A favorite LP, probably lead to more Al tonight…

Al Stewart / Time Passages
1978 Arista
Produced by Alan Parsons. Side 1’s finale ”A Man For All Seasons” usually coaxes me onto Side 2.

So, now to Side 2…

Ran out of gas last night, so this morning I'm finishing up The Stone Roses - "Second Coming".

I gotta say, overall, I prefer this second release over the first one. With the exception of "This is the One" from the first record. That is the best song from The Stone Roses - IMHO.

Andy Pratt - S/T

Again! "Avenging Annie" is one of my favorite pop-ish songs, ever!

Bridget Saint John ‎– Songs For The Gentle Man (Trading Places 1971)

She's the one who sings on the Kevin Ayres' song; The Oyster and the Flying Fish.

My old Acoustic Signature turntable made it safely (whew!) to our old friend uberwaltz today.  He said to say hi to the gang!

Hello Uber ! Miss him. Congrats on the TT.

The Band - Cahoots ( 50 th )…eying my other pressing as surplus….

Man @bdp24 I am really hoping Rock of Ages gets this treatment…..

Tim and Brian, i also have a Decca on my to do list…..eventually

i am a microvolt robot in a gigavolt circuit

@tomic601: Me too! Rock Of Ages is I believe my favorite live Rock ’n’ Roll album, along with their collaboration with Dylan on Before The Flood (I have a Capitol original, waiting for the MoFi repress). Until then, do you know about the expanded 4 CD/1 DVD issue of ROA, entitled Live At The Academy Of Music 1971? The Band played two nights, the expanded LATAOM containing both entire shows. Mixed by Bob Clearmountain, as have been all the 50th anniversary Band boxsets.

Eric - I recall you mentioned that before….how does it compare to the MoFi which i have ( yes that LP can be improved w tone controls ! )….

? i have an SACD rip also at 24x88, lacking in air, treble, like somebody duct taped the cymbals…argh….

Merry Christmas to you

Jim

Don’t know Jim, I haven’t heard the MoFi. In fact, I don’t think I knew about it! My attitude used to be that MoFi issues of many of their album choices were a waste of time and money. If a recording isn’t really, really good to begin with, why bother? That’s why I also never got their version of The Basement Tapes. Another reason is that Robertson re-recorded some of his guitar parts for that album’s original LP release in the mid-70’s. The Dylan Bootleg Series Volume 11 is the version of The Basement Tapes to have---Eric.

@big_greg  - Please tell Kevin @uberwaltz that Tom said "Hi!" and "Merry Christmas!" if he's not watching the thread. Also tell him that we miss him around here.

@big_greg Greg, glad you’re in touch with Kevin.  Please give him my regards too.

- James

Ordered the 2 x CD version, unopened for $20 delivered. They get $150+ for the box set….hopefully the CD rips will come close to what i could extract from DVDa

And Eric you must have mentioned this before as the box set is in my Discogs “ wishlist “…. ha, memory is fleeting….

I am a Pirate Robot looking wistfully back at Fourty

@reubent Tom, I have the 2nd Stone Roses album on cassette.   One of the relatively few new bands of that era that I had time to enjoy.  I agree with you in that it’s my favorite of theirs.  Thanks for the reminders about them recently.

The Milk Carton Kids – Monterey (Anti- 2015)

@slaw recommended this last week so I bought it. He's right. I’m gonna second that rec.

Jim and Tim, I rarely recommend the Decca. It’s fussy about tonearms. I also think it works best on an idler but that could be my bias. It also works best into a good tube phono amp. My SG has a John Wright fitted Paratrace stylus and a Decapod enhanced body. It’s damn good. But, what do I know? I don’t have a good MC to compare it to. All I know is it makes exquisite music.

The Milk Carton Kids were for me one of the highlights of the New Basement Tapes (along with Marcus Mumford). I do wish they were a little more like The Everly Brothers than Simon & Garfunkel, but then I’m more of a 50’s than a 60’s guy, and more of a Rocker than a Folkie.

Of course, S & G modelled their harmonies on those of the Brothers (the higher part a third above the lower one), as did Lennon & McCartney. It was when they added George on a third part that they got REALLY good, like The Byrds. The harmonies Brian Wilson wrote for The Beach Boys were far above those of either group, very sophisticated.

Miami Chamber Trio - S/T (Audiophile 1977)

Good binaural recording which makes it a good listen.

Brian, Thanks for the comments about the Decca. Good to know.

Eleanor Friedberger / Rebound

@spiritofradio  - As always, You're Welcome. That's what this thread is all about. Sharing new vinyl recommendations and reminding about older stuff that's worth a re-listen.

Happy Christmas Week!

Re-listening to a few of the latest Plaid Room Records haul due to a system problem I found after the original listen. Already re-listened to Andy Pratt and it was EXCELLENT. Up now...

Nils Lofgren - "Wonderland"

Billy Bragg - "Talking With the Taxman About Poetry"

Worth the price just for the track - "Levi Stubbs' Tears"

Dang guys, you're on it tonight...

@big_greg  - I love Nick Lowe - "The Rose of England". I saw his solo show a few years ago. A blazing 30 song solo set of 2 minute songs without a break. What a hoot!
