@bslon

The records that arrived this week ..... haven't had a chance to play yet.

@bslon  +1 Thelma Houston & Pressure Cooker. This recording belongs in the "Super Disc" category. What stands out to me is how dynamic and uncompressed this recording is. One of the best!

@dayglow @bslon

That Thelma Houston lp on Sheffield, came out in two versions. I can’t recall the difference at the moment but I have both.

@slaw  From Discogs the reissue is ST 200 year unknown. LAB 2 must be the original pressing.

Awesome!  I have the Sheffield-Lab 2 issue.  Have owned it since first released.  In perfect condition, of course.  I'll just have to play it this weekend.

Thanks guys.

@slaw @dayglow In 1976, tired of my budget lo-fi stereo I went into McLain’s HiFi in Beaverton, OR. The rep put that Thelma LP on and, kind of stunned, I ended up walking out with a Garrard Zero 100, Sansui 8080 and ESS AMT1a’s which got me started in this awesome performance audio biz. Playing that record takes me back there, I love that feeling.

@bslon  I had a similar experience.  Having purchased my first hi-fi system in 1973, then in 1976 I went to a small HiFi retailer in Claremont, CA (Omega High Fidelity Music Systems) and they put on that album for me.  I upgraded my turntable setup by purchasing from them a new B&O turntable and paid extra for the top-end B&O cartridge.  It made a tremendous improvement to my system.  I also bought the album.  A few systems later, and still here doing it and loving it.  Ain't this fun!!!

Bill that album in particular To Know Me is to Love Me has been an enduring reference for me over many years now… at least 40. ;-)) Sheffield did some amazing work…

Running in a fabulous gift from a great friend, audiophile and importantly music lover @mr_m . Thanks so much for the Mullard Blackburns Tim ;-) Midrange magic abounds !

The initial release is the coveted Direct to Disc, the Treasury series copy  is from the protection copy master tape. I suggest serious listeners get a six pack or 8 pack of Thelma, Grusin, Harry James and Mayorga/McBroom. All great recordings, musicians and super important in discerning what the extra step of tape leaves on the table…

I'm late to the party here, but wanted to add that a friend brought over a collection of ~20 vintage cartridges that we swapped onto my SP10MkII that I had at the time. The Grace F9 was the one I wanted of his. I ran a couple of interesting ones that my pal, the infamous Raul, sold me...a Goldbug Clement II mc, Satin 21B and a Signet 111E. Signet was to AT as Lexus is to Toyota. The Signet is pretty good if you find one in good shape. All are MC so make sure you've got enough gain.

I have the LAB 2 and ST 200 also.  I haven't listened to them back to back to compare.  Might be a fun exercise.  I thought they both sounded great when I played them.  Both are NM-.

Sonic Youth -- "Battery Park, NYC: July 4th, 2008

Great recording, but this is the second bad pressing  in a row (lots of noise, and not the good kind, especially on side one), so back it goes. Will have to settle for streaming this one on Qobuz evidently.

Thelma !

the store i worked at carried the Sheffield and Windham Hill discs. They were $30 in the Eighties. I had a few enlightened customers and found my way to Thelma and beyond on my way to building out what i called the poor mans HQD system.

Monk at Carnegie playing now

Spencer - We were a Signet dealer. They had high standards on setup tools, test records, microscope, training, etc. I greatly benefited from that. I skipped a step or three and went to a Dynavector Ruby..but the Signets were loved by many.

also the Treasury series are fantastic, i don’t look down on them…just educational

The Kinks "One For the Road, Live"

1980/Arista/pp

Nice and punchy, dynamic, open.....

Max Goberman conducts Corelli - Twelve Concerti Grossi, Opus 6 Complete. The Vienna Sinfonietta. Odyssey 3LP box 1967

I believe that I told this story some months ago.  I worked in the CE industry for 42 years until retiring 3 years ago.  I met a ton of people along the way and one of them was the General Manager/Sales Director of Shefield Lab at the time, Mr. Andrew Teton.  During a CES he gave me a "Special CES Preview Edition" of James Newton Howard Quintet.  It's a fabulous album, musically and sonically.  The Preview Edition is in a plain white jacket with a Shefield Lab sticker on it that also has the album title, the list of musicians, PProduced & Engineered by Bill Schnee" and "available to dealers April 13".  I have taped to the front of this plain jacket, the business card that Andrew gave me at the time.  I have always kept it in pristine condition and it sounds today as good as it did the first time I played it.  Good memories, and killer music!

Joel what a great story - that would be a gr8 demo disc for the Apollo 12.999999 audition

The Wonderful Sounds Of Male Vocals - Analogue Productions
2020 Sony Entertainment

UPS today. Top notch SQ, have never heard Pure Prairie League’s Amie sound so good. Other cuts as well.

My question got me wondering....uh,oh. I guess a D2D wouldn't have a test pressing.

Has any one heard of or listened to DIANA ANKUDINOVA? I've only seen her performances on YouTube  were she performs on a Russian TV show similar to the voice  She is a Contralto and Polyphonic She has an amazing voice to say the least and many of her performances where at the age of 14 & 15 Apparently she's releasing an album on December 8th and l can't wait

Newly acquired Mingus-The Black Saint and the Sinner Lady Acoustic Sounds Series 2021.

This mix is off-the-charts good. So much more depth and clarity than the 1973 Reissue that I’ve heard many times. Unbelievable really.

Not sure how I follow this, might just spin this til bedtime!

Steve, no not a "test pressing" as you figured out.  But certainly one of the early pressings off of the master as this is the first group of discs available, before pressings available to dealers after April 13, 1983.

Note; that was at my very first CES.  In total I attended 43 CES.  Unfortunately, they were nearly always all work and little time to roam the show.  Only those in Chicago (back then there were 2 CES per year, Las Vegas for Winter and Chicago for Summer) was I able to roam the show because very few of my dealers attended the Chicago show.  CES soon became just one show per year, Winter show at Las Vegas.  At the Las Vegas show I was swamped, typically with 2 business meetings simultaneously, bouncing between tables, from morning to end of day.  It's nice to be retired now😊  I've been building my present system since leaving the workforce.

Warren Zevon - Excitable Boy

Beatles - Let It Be … Naked (wanted to listen as I have been watching the Get Back special on Disney +)

Joel - My first CES included the Drake…fond memories…. I bet you were busy !

@nicks25

My music friend and I are getting together soon for a day of streaming Let It Be.

BTW, I believe the first two mainstream Zevon lps are going to become available as One-steps next year.

Thanks for the heads up Steve.  I will be looking for them. Big fan of his.

Enjoy the streaming -  great album.  Not a big fan of the Phil Spector production which is why I purchased the McCartney release.

Nick, I meant to write, the making of Let it Be.

I think Phil messed up All Things Must Pass as well.

Power quality was lacking today even with 2 dedicated lines? Your always at the mercy of DTE and the recording engineer. I also had a tube acting(noise) up in my Allnic H 1200 phono stage time for a SS upgrade. So not the most enjoyable playback session.

Vittorio Negri Bryks conducts Albinoni - Concerti A Cinque, Op.9, Concerti Nos.1, 4, 7 & 10 For Solo Violin. Italian Baroque Ensemble With Cesare Ferraresi, violin. Dover 1964

Steve - that’s what I have been watching on Disney +.  My son has a subscription so I am reaping the benefit.   Over 6 hours in 3 episodes.  I am about half way through.  Sure you will enjoy.  Will be interested to hear your opinion of the dynamics at work.
